In the oration Moyses, vir Dei (1452), the Italian humanist Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini addresses the pope, Nicholas V, the request for a crusade against the Turks. In addition to exposing the ...necessity and feasibility of a crusade, Piccolomini addresses the issue of papal authority. Indeed, on the one hand, the oration admits the superiority of pontifical power over imperial or conciliar power; on the other hand, it identifies the pope as the only person having the authority to decide on crusade matters. In both cases, Piccolomini resorts to identifying the pope with Moses, inheriting two Medieval and Renaissance traditions. According to the first one, Mosaic authority is the model for papal authority. Received directly from God, it is therefore indisputable, insurmountable and indivisible. According to the second tradition, Moses is the typological prefiguration of Christ and of the crusader leader, intent on leading the Chosen People towards earthly and eternal freedom. The present study aims to analyze the interplay, in the oration, of these two typological frames.
This article reflects on the centrality of the senses of sight and hearing in the birth of romantic love. It explores the treatment of two forms of love, natural and divine, in fifteenth- and early ...sixteenth-century Italy, tracing the initial movements of the former and shifts in the latter. Making use of two literary works, by Enea Silvio Piccolomini (Pope Pius II) and Pietro Bembo, two paintings, by Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, and several treatises on marital obligation and the "marital debt", it charts the emergence of the idea that sensual love was legitimate in marriage and the impact of affective mysticism on the concept of divine love.

Of the various types of ruins, some are precipitated by nature and time, but others, more violently, in conflict and war. Such ruins act as signs of wasteful and destructive human acts, and often ...carry hortatory overtones for the viewer. The ruin, far from being a 'mark of peace' (as Simmel, in his classic article suggests), is a sign that warns of man's violent nature. This idea is explored in this paper, in part, through the work of modern artists Anselm Kiefer and Anne and Patrick Poirier. Author then looks to the ancient world, to Greece and Rome and to such examples as Rome and Athens, as well as to iconic modern sites such as the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in Berlin and the Königsplatz in Munich. The author offers a summary typology of the ruin and suggests that we can construct a model of restless yet significant sites.
