Based on field work and seismic reflection data, we investigate the Cenozoic tectono-sedimentary evolution offshore and onshore Ibiza allowing the proposal of a new tectonic agenda for the region and ...its integration in the geodynamic history of the West Mediterranean. The late Oligocene–early Miocene rifting event, which characterizes the Valencia Trough and the Algerian Basin, located north and south of the study area respectively, is also present in Ibiza and particularly well-expressed in the northern part of the island. Among these two rifted basins initiated in the frame of the European Cenozoic Rift System, the Valencia Trough failed rapidly while the Algerian Basin evolved after as a back-arc basin related to the subduction of the Alpine–Maghrebian Tethys. The subsequent middle Miocene compressional deformation was localized by the previous extensional faults, which were either inverted or passively translated depending on their initial orientation. Despite the lateral continuity between the External Betics and the Balearic Promontory, it appears from restored maps that this tectonic event cannot be directly related to the Betic orogen, but results from compressive stresses transmitted through the Algerian Basin. A still active back-arc asthenospheric rise likely explains the stiff behavior of this basin, which has remained poorly deformed up to recent time. During the late Miocene a new extensional episode reworked the southern part of the Balearic Promontory. It is suggested that this extensional deformation developed in a trans-tensional context related to the westward translation of the Alboran Domain and the coeval right-lateral strike-slip movement along the Emile Baudot Escarpment bounding the Algerian Basin to the north.
•A late Oligocene to early Miocene extensional deformation is recognized in Ibiza Island.•The middle Miocene contractional deformation of Ibiza is coeval to the docking of the Kabylies against the African margin.•The middle Miocene contractional deformation does not affect the Algerian Basin, which remains active at this moment.
The island of Ibiza is a western Mediterranean destination known internationally for its nightlife. The aim of this paper is to make a proposal to classify the different types of premises in the ...Ibiza nightlife offer. This involves making a first definition that allows to delimit which businesses are parts of the sector. The methodology used is based on the case study and specifically, on the review of the promotional actions and activities carried out, completed with the visit to the premises. The classification has been made based on the offer marketed and not only on the legal forms used, as innovation goes ahead of the existing legal classifications. Although it is a particular application, due to the international importance of Ibiza, it is a good starting point to classify the nightlife offer of many other tourist destinations. The resulting typology divides the sector into two large groups: nightclubs and other premises. While nightclubs have musical parties as their main activity declared, the other premises have accommodation or catering as their main activity, with music being an element of differentiation. Nightclubs are divided into several subgroups, depending on their size and relevance. The other premises are subdivided into Beach Clubs, Hotel Clubs, Party Boats, Lounge Clubs, Disco Pubs, among others.
In order to better constrain the chronology of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) onland and to provide new observations on the stratigraphic position of the Messinian erosional surface as well as ...evidence for continentalization, we have studied the Mio-Pleistocene succession of the island of Ibiza, ideally located in a strategic position between the peripheral Messinian basins of south-eastern Spain and the MSC-related gypsum of the Palma Basin (Mallorca).
Five lithological units are identified and compared with those known from the island of Mallorca. The equivalent of the “reef” unit, mainly Tortonian in age, is composed of median to inner ramp facies. It is overlain by coastal alluvial fans set up under extensive tectonic control, and then by a carbonate unit rich in oolites and microbialites attributed to the Terminal Carbonate Complex (TCC) of Messinian age. The overlying red clays fossilizing paleosols express a continentalization phase at the end of the Miocene. This regressive episode is evidenced by karstification and erosion incising the pre-crisis units and shaping valleys connected to submarine canyons. The erosion surface is linked to the acme of the MSC, a major sea-level fall, and is then sealed by Pliocene coastal calcarenites or by Pleistocene eolianites. The emptying of the basin led to a global collapse, which is recorded on all the slope domains of the Mediterranean margins. We document this collapse for the first time onland by syn-MSC gravity events such as mudflows, upwelling of geothermal fluids under pressure and soft deformation of the TCC. The interweaving of these phenomena of multiple origin (baselevel decrease, climate change, geothermal activity, sediment transfer) contributes to the onland/offshore reshaping of the Mediterranean margins during the major environmental changes of the Messinian salinity crisis.
•Two main regressions and transgressions control Upper Miocene sedimentation.•Extensional tectonic influence is well expressed during Tortono-Messinian interval.•The major regression with generalized emersion is recorded after TCC deposits.•The emersion is contemporaneous with gravitational instabilities and major erosion.•Major erosion is related to the MSC Margin Erosion Surface.
The article studies the reception of a terracotta bust from the Punic period. Discovered in Ibiza, it has become a very famous emblem of the island. Starting with its discovery in 1913, the article ...describes the reception it has received, both in the scholarly sphere and in popular culture. It focuses in particular on the hippie period and on the industrialisation of tourism (since 1970s), which constitute two important moments in the reception of the bust. It also attempts to identify the mechanisms and processes that have led to its current status as a symbol of the island.
•Scorpaena scrofa is a species of high commercial and recreational value.•Survival and physiological stress of specimens below the minimum size were studied.•Trammel net and fishing line were the ...most selective fishing gear over S. scrofa.•Survival 24 h after capture by trawl, net fishing and line was 0, 70 and 100%, respectively.•Trawling induced greater physiological stress in S. scrofa than in other gears.
The red scorpionfish Scorpaena scrofa (Linnaeus 1758) is a species of high commercial value in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The market value of S. scrofa is highly related to its size, with smaller individuals, less than 25 cm, sold mixed with other species with a low commercial value with respect to the larger ones. Fishing stress and survival of the specimens of S. scrofa under 25 cm were analysed from captures by fishing line, trammel nets and trawling. Line and trammel net were the most selective fishing gears and both gears had the higher survival rates (100% and 70% respectively), while trawling recorded a 0% survival rate. Superoxide dismutase activity was significantly higher in trawling than the other capture methods and the control group, while the glutathione reductase was lower in trawling and trammel net compared to the control group. No differences were observed in catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities. Malondialdehyde levels were elevated in S. scrofa captured by trawling and trammel net when compared with the controls. Cortisol and lactate were significantly higher in individuals captured by trawling and trammel net respect fishing line and control and glucose levels were increased in individuals captured by trammel net. According to the obtained results, the establishment of measures to favour the release of smaller specimens could contribute to an improvement in the conservation of the stocks of S. scrofa and an increase in the future value of catches.
