Construction of the A-4 Motorway section in the Opole Region begun in Summer 1997. Very soon vigorous resistance of ecological NGOs was encountered. The bone of contention was the section of motorway ...that passes through the Góra Świętej Anny Landscape Park and verges the natural reserve of strict protection Ligota Dolna where rare species of thermophilic plants are sheltered. Between 2011 and 2013 a detailed mycological, geobotanical, floristic and fauna research took place within the right-of-way of the A-4 Motorway section crossing the Góra Świętej Anny Landscape Park in the Opole Region. The survey revealed several rare and protected species of fungi, plants and animals along the road, including the greatest in Poland population of Austrian flax Linum austriacum. The area also harbors the only site of xerothermic grass of Festuco-Brometea class with so many rare and putrefying plant species inside a motorway’s right-of-way in Poland. Given the occurrence of many interesting species of plants and animals in the motorway surrounding it seems justified to establish a system of ecological monitoring, which could provide a range of valuable findings regarding the impact of motorway traffic on surrounding flora and fauna. This knowledge would be very useful for all those involved in construction of next motorways in Poland as well as for a wide circle of interested researchers.
We provide information about two species, Pilosella bauhinii and P. cymosa subsp. vaillantii (Asteraceae), from new localities in north-central Poland (ATPOL DC18). All individuals of both species ...grew on a railway embankment in Górzno-Lidzbark Landscape Park. The ecological preferences for P. cymosa and P. bauhinii estimated according to average Ellenberg values nearly coincided with the original description of Ellenberg. We also sequenced the barcode marker, plastid trnH-psbA intergenic spacer, for two individuals of P. bauhinii, three specimens of P. cymosa subsp. vaillantii, and additionally two individuals of P. officinarum L. and one H. murorum L. growing in close proximity. A pairwise comparison of trnH-psbA sequences showed that each species has a unique haplotype. Taking into account their morphological coherence, it is possible that both P. bauhinii and P. cymosa have not hybridized yet, at least locally, with the more abundant species (e.g., P. officinarum). A search for reference sequences did not provide additional information because of the low quality of the reference database for this group in GenBank. Only 14 sequences of trnH-psbA were available with some apparently being misidentified or of low quality. None were identical to sequences of P. cymosa subsp. vaillantii and P. bauhinii found in this study.

The Stuttgart Region ...covers 5 counties and 179 independent municipalities over an area of 3650 square kilometres in the southwestern part of Germany. The competences of the Verband Region Stuttgart cover not only (mandatory) regional planning and spatial development, but also the construction and operation of the regional railway system, economic development and marketing.
In this context, the Landscape Park has been introduced to enhance the ecological quality and recreational value of open spaces. By now, it has become a successful instrument which helps local institutions to develop green infrastructure as an important locational factor.
Udin Boršt is an isolated conglomerate terrace in Gorenjska region, Slovenia. A number of surface karst features and caves developed here due to the predominance of carbonate gravel. It is one of the ...last contiguous areas of lowland forest in Gorenjska region, and a popular recreation location for the people living nearby. Due to its karst surface and the forest it offered shelter to the locals in turbulent times. Its role during the period when bandits (rokovnjači) was common and during the Second World War is still preserved in folk memory. Due to its natural and cultural heritage, the area was protected as a Memorial park in 1985, but the legislation has become outdated and needs to be amended and updated. This article presents new findings on the geomorphological and intangible cultural heritage that need to be incorporated in the amended legislation.
