In the assessment of complex spatial planning projects, the ecological impacts and socio-economic impacts are fundamental to the evaluation. The measurements of ecological impacts of spatial plans ...have to be integrated in a standardised way. In the present paper, we analyse two Dutch case studies and apply the standardised Threat-Weighted Ecological Quality Area measurement. This measurement is developed to evaluate projects with terrestrial impacts but has not yet been applied for water evaluations. We aim to show how the use of a common measurement tool incorporates both ecological quality and degree of threat on criteria in the EU Water Framework Directive and Nature 2000. The measurements discussed here derive from two cases of cost–benefit analysis: The first case is the Markermeer, the second largest lake of The Netherlands, and a study on water quality improvement and nature restoration; an artificial island will also be the setting for a new residential area. The second case study is on water level management carried out on the IJsselmeer, the largest lake in the country. Results of our analysis show the potential impacts with a standardised method to the spatial distribution and quality of the ecosystems.
The 2002 World Summit in Johannesburg has declared the year 2010 as "Year of Biodiversity", though erosion of biodiversity around the world is still ongoing. Some actions were initiated by national ...Governments and the European Union, like Nature 2000 Network and Sustainable Forest Management. Pursuing the above EU targets, the administration of the Latium region (central Italy) has issued several acts with the aim of creating a system of protected areas where the main focus for silvicultural activities is on biodiversity conservation and the preservation of multi-functionality of forests. Priority of forest planning activities and financing has been given to main habitats and species, sensu 92/43/CEE and 79/409/CEE European Directives. The Nature 2000 Network and the regional offices of Forestry and Protected Areas worked together to increase the forest managed areas, to apply the SFM (Sustainable Forest Management) practices and to promote local community development. The Forest Conservation Area, with the help of EU Funds, is financing a Forest Management Plan in Nature 2000 sites and protected areas. The offices for Protected Areas and Nature 2000 Network are working to simplify the administrative procedures for logging in special Protected areas and in forest habitats with no specific conservation priority.
Small-game hunting is of great economic importance in Portugal. Game managers claim that game management restrictions regarding shoots inside the Nature 2000 Network negatively influence small-game ...bags, particularly of hare, wild rabbit and red-legged partridge. We analyse whether different habitat and game management practices are associated with game bags of those species in Alentejo (Portugal). Game bag records from five hunting seasons referring to shoots both inside and outside Nature 2000 sites were analysed. Significant differences concerning habitat and game management descriptors were found between shoots inside and outside Nature 2000 sites. However, this ecological network does not seem to correlate with hare and red-legged partridge game bags, whilst it may negatively influence wild rabbit hunting results. Considering that habitat quality for wild rabbit is rather poor inside the studied Nature 2000 sites, further investigation is needed of the possible negative influence of this ecological network on the species’ game bag. Hare game bags increase with extensive non-irrigated agricultural fields and orchards. Besides these two habitats, red-legged partridge game bags are also favoured by cork oak

where predators are controlled. The game bags of the three small-game species studied increase with hunting effort. Further, our results suggest that there is a positive relation between hunting effort and small-game population abundance.
W artykule przedstawiono problemy gospodarki wodnej zbiornika Hajka, położonego w województwie zachodniopomorskim, na obszarze Natura 2000 „Dolina Radwi, Chocieli i Chotli”. Został on utworzony przez ...spiętrzenie zapory przed zbiornikiem Rosnowo, tworząc kaskadę w środkowym biegu Radwi o funkcji energetycznej.
The article presents the problems of water management of the Hajka reservoir, located in the West Pomeranian Province, in the Natura 2000 area of the “Radwi Valley, Chociece and Chotla.” It was created by damming the dam in front of the Rosnowo reservoir, creating a cascade in the middle reaches of Radwia with an energy function. Akwen is a recreational and tourist destination, a water drawing point, a natural refuge, as well as a flood control. In view of so many functions, the authors considered how natural, social, economic and legal interests could be reconciled. In addition, the indicators related to the quality of surface waters flowing into the reservoir and flowing from the reservoir as well as in the reservoir itself were analyzed. The article contains an analysis of the legal regulations related to the rational management of the reservoir, taking into account its location in the Natura 2000 area.
The paper presents development problems encountered by rural self-governments and economic entities in connection with their operation in the areas covered by the European ecological network Nature ...2000. In the subjective opinion of the surveyed representatives of rural communities this network creates serious barriers to development. Such negative perception of Nature 2000 can be blamed largely on the insufficient knowledge of actual investment restrictions, which can be attributed to the lack of necessary information, and on the disregard for the opinion of local governments in the process of selection of such areas. However, the attractive features of the local natural environment are often regarded by the inhabitants of rural areas as factors essential for the stimulation of economic activity and for development.
