Summary
The article reviews the progress in the actual research and development of graphitic carbon dots , especially with regard to their synthesis and the possibilities of their chemical and biomedical applications. As a new category of nanomaterials, graphitic carbon dots offer some outstanding properties: a tunable photoluminescence up to the IR region, high biocompatibility, low toxicity, high chemical stability and water solubility. Graphitic carbon dots can be prepared from any organic matter by green, convenient and low‐cost methods. Moreover, surface passivation and functionalization of the carbon dots as well as modification with other elements allow the control of their physicochemical and photoluminescence properties. Since their discovery in 2004, graphitic carbon dots have found many possibilities of applications in the fields of chemical sensing, in the biomedical diagnostics and therapy and photocatalysis which are very promising for the future development.
Lignin is one of the most abundant natural polymers after cellulose and has attracted great attention in academia as well as in industry for miscellaneous applications. Lignin also exhibits very high ...potential as a renewable sustainable resource for a galaxy of high value biochemicals. Due to the typical structure of lignin, it can be converted into different types of useful products. From a ligno-cellulose bio-refinery prospective point of view, it can be regarded as an economic bio product and can also be used as filler in several polymers to form blends or composites. Recently lignin-based hydrogels have shown excellent performance for removal of various pollutants from water. The adsorption properties of lignin based hydrogels can further be improved by using a combination of nanomaterials and lignin that results in promising hydrogel nanocomposites. In nature, the most abundant structures are formed by the combination of lignin, cellulose and hemicelluloses. In this article, we have attempted to comprehensively review the research work carried out in the direction of usage of lignin-based hydrogel for removal of toxic pollutants including metal ions and dyes.

Heteroatom-doped carbon nanomaterials are highly promising cost-effective electrocatalysts for replacing noble metal nanomaterials in many energy-related electrocatalytic fields. Herein, the ...nitrogen-doped graphene aerogels (N-GA) with tunable nitrogen content are synthesized by the pyrolysis of the graphene aerogels-polyallylamine (GA-PAA) hybrids. By changing the molecular weight of PAA in the GA-PAA hybrids, the nitrogen content of the N-GA can be regulated from 0.58% to 2.07%. The electrocatalytic activity of the N-GA increases with the nitrogen content for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the alkaline media. The three-dimensionally porous interconnected structure and the nitrogen doping endow the N-GA with excellent electrocatalytic activity and durability for the ORR in the alkaline media.
