This paper deals with the importance of the spatial, geographic aspect in analyzing ferry traffic, especially on Croatian islands. The importance of ferry traffic is analyzed within the regional ...development of the European Union as a whole, as well as through some examples from different states. The analytical part of the paper deals with correlation between the ferry traffic and its two most striking indirect consequences that are present on Croatian islands, and those are demographic development and tourism. There is a close, direct connection between ferry traffic and tourism, as well as between ferry traffic and general demographic trends. Since there is no evidence of correlation between the index of seasonal frequency of the ferry lines (direct reflection of tourism) and the index of change in population trends on Croatian islands analyzed in this paper, the conclusion is that tourism, as the main economic activity on Croatian islands, can ease – but not significantly eliminate – depopulation characteristics of the insular part of Croatia.
This book (‘The development of protected areas in Slovenia’) discusses the development of protected areas in Slovenia. Due to Slovenia’s natural and cultural diversity, these areas are extensive, and ...therefore their special features should also be taken into account in efforts to stimulate regional development. Because of the vulnerable relationships that exist within them, protected areas require integrated planning, which should focus not only on protecting biodiversity and natural heritage, but first and foremost on sustainable development and conservation of established relationships between people and the environment, which are reflected in unique cultural landscapes. The authors analyze various aspects of managing protected areas: defining them, legal frameworks, their role in prevention against natural disasters, their special features in terms of management, and so on. Descriptions of individual cases often highlight the importance of including all stakeholders because only in this way is a protected area acknowledged and accepted as a development opportunity and not an obstacle.Volume seeks to identify patterns for development coordination, negotiations, and stimulation that rely on areas’ potentials and their conservation, while also making possible their sustainable growth and development.
According to recent research, modern development in Croatia is burdened by distinct regional disparities. As differences in socioeconomic development are the key generator of spatial mobility of the ...population, this is reflected in the atrophy of demographic resources of less developed areas, and consequently in the destabilization of their population. Due to the connections between economic and demographic development, the paper examines demographic resources as an indicator and factor in the disparities occurring in the regional development of the country. Demographic resources in 2001 and 2011 on three hierarchical levels of regional development and four spatial categories are explored, as well as the composite index of development of counties in 2013. The research process includes the calculation of synthetic indicators of demographic potential – the index of demographic resources (ider) and its evaluation within the typological scale of six threshold values. The research results show that: first, Croatia has a highly uneven spatial distribution of demographic resources; second, more than half the number of the counties belong to the first development category, and only three counties to the fourth development category; third, regions in the fourth development category are characterized by favorable demographic resources, while areas in the first category are characterized by weak demographic resources; and fourth, structural and dynamic characteristics of the index of demographic resources clearly indicate specific development problems in certain parts of the country.
Zanje so najpomembnejši dejavniki življenjske razmere, kakovost javnega prostora, izobrazba in zdravstvo.
The book Nove razvojne perspektive ('New development prospects') discusses various aspects of Slovenia’s development, focusing on general topics of regional and rural development. With regard to ...rural development, the following four strongly interconnected topics are primarily highlighted: cultural heritage, tourism, (organic) farming, and the environment. The volume also include broader topics that go beyond the rural character: explaining development differences in Slovenia, regional differences in the structure of occupations as a structural factor of the Slovenian economy, the flexibility of spatial systems, and new developments in presenting geostatistical data. Future plans are also discussed—that is, preparation of strategic and program documents for the new 2014–2020 financial framework. Common bases for improving the connections between spatial and development plans at the regional level are presented in addition to the spatial development guidelines used for preparing a new version of Slovenia’s Development Strategy, and the guidelines for preparing a new generation of regional development programs.
