The Gwich'in Natives of Arctic Village, Alaska, have experienced intense social and economic changes for more than a century. In the late 20th century, new transportation and communication ...technologies introduced radically new value systems; while some of these changes may be seen as socially beneficial, others suggest a weakening of what was once a strong and vibrant Native community. Using quantitative and qualitative data gathered since the turn of the millennium, this volume offers an interdisciplinary evaluation of the developments that have occurred in the community over the past several decades.
We analyzed and categorized fishing villages from a nationwide perspective about the size and form of the settlement, and based on these results, we examined the formation process and residential ...range in North Kinki. In fishing villages, the village form is defined by the correspondence with the terrain. Taking North Kinki as an example, various formation processes were seen even in one village form. Also, since the fishing villages before the early modern period were mainly for maritime traffic, some villages did not have a main axis in the early modern period.

This study investigates whether village funds, village-owned enterprises (henceforth, BUMDes), and village original income in Indonesia (PADes) enhance rural development. We employ three empirical ...methodologies to analyze data collected from 361 districts across Indonesia. These methods encompass cross-section regression, Difference-in-Difference (DID) technique, and Structural Equation Model (SEM)-based mediation analysis. The findings show that village funds positively and significantly impact rural development (measured using the village development index). However, the impact of BUMDes on rural development shows weak evidence. The quasi-experiment also reveals that districts with higher funding for their villages do not experience greater improvements in the village development index between 2016 and 2020. Furthermore, our study indicates that PADes play a crucial role in determining rural development, either directly or as a mediator for village funds and BUMDes. Policymakers should monitor the allocation of village funds to evaluate future allocation policies. Additionally, PADes performance is important for determining village fund transfers and development progress.
Urban villages are typical informal settlements in Chinese cities where rural villages were gradually surrounded by urban built environments during urbanisation. In the era of urban renewal, these ...“urban enclaves” have been systematically demolished due to their “chaotic” building layouts and “backward” appearance. Existing policies related to the redevelopment of urban villages mainly follow a “demolish-rebuild” orientation, while lacking sufficient consideration of the mechanisms behind their environmental aspects and performances. In the long run, such a direction of urban redevelopment will hinder the achievement of sustainable development goals. This paper reviews the major municipal-level policies that relate to urban villages and urban renewal in Shenzhen through the adoption of systematic literature survey and content analysis. An analytical framework of “Three Contents and Six Instruments” is established to examine the highlighted and overlooked aspects of these policies. Results reveal that Shenzhen’s implemented policies aim to formulise, modernise, and consequently homogenise urban villages into “urban-like modern communities” through the following upgrades: urban infrastructure development, improvement of sanitation conditions, and building façade beautification. However, these approaches for “environmental enhancement” were not primarily based on identifying and understanding the real causes of the exhibiting “environmental problems.” Meanwhile, the inspiration and inheritance of informal rules, especially the involvement and participation of residents for the rehabilitation of urban villages have been entirely overlooked. These two overlooked crucial aspects should be introduced in policy-making and integrated with existing adopted strategies to match local contexts and resolve specific issues. The paper advocates to extend the connotation of the concept of environment from an infrastructural consideration to a mechanism-based and performance-orientation thinking during the making of urban renewal policies. It suggests that environment could be utilised as an inclusive medium to efficiently frame and link multiple aspects in the policies.
•Demolish-rebuild-oriented urban village renewal affects urban land use and sustainability.•Content analysis was adopted to identify focused and overlooked aspects of Shenzhen’s policies.•Environmental evaluation and informal intervention were overlooked in the existing policies.•Guidance and framework for inclusive and sustainable urban renewal policy-making are provided.
The objectives to be achieved in this study are to identify and analyze the challenges of implementing the Sidomulyo Village Fund (Kota Batu) which is oriented towards the principle of protection and ...empowerment of rural communities. The research method used is empirical yuridical research, data obtained and collected through triangulation (multi-method). Primary data obtained by observation and interviews (interviews). Participant observation was used to explore symptomatic data. Meanwhile, in-depth interviews were used to explore categories of impression or view data. This study analyzes feminist legal theory, where Feminist Legal Theory emphasizes delegitimacy to reject the dominance of certain orders or structures which are patriarchal structures in society that are used as the basis for drafting legislation. In Peace Village (Desa Sidomulyo-Kota Batu), we can look at the global gender gap index and the index for women, peace, and global security for each citizen in the village, to provide an assessment of how the Peace Village Concept is implemented. Discussing the role of the Village Fund in Sidomulyo-Kota Batu Village in the Village Peace process, especially those related to women, in this case, the researcher will provide an important academic and intellectual framework on how the Peace Village Concept can be improved from a cognitive perspective. Many people assume that women play a passive role in violent extremism or that women are always "victims" of violent extremism and instead hide the various ways in which women can participate in extremism and violence. Empowerment of women needs to be done to undermine radical ideology, prevent social conflict, intolerance, and violent extremism. Gender equality between women and men is not just a matter of empowering women, but it also requires ongoing structural changes that prevent social/cultural harm, sexism, racism, and authoritarian power relations. Moreover, the polarization between men, who want to fight back, and women who seek peaceful means, has been criticized.
Village groups are a common phenomenon in Huizhou Region, a historical region in eastern China where shared inter-village spaces play important roles in linking villages. This study analyzes the ...spatial layouts and characteristics of the inter-village space in the Hongguan village group in Wuyuan County, Jiangxi Province. A comprehensive literature review and the results of field research, qualitative analysis, and quantitative analysis prove that the regional spatial structure is maintained among inter-village space, landmarks, villagers, and villages within the village group. Through a summarized analysis of nine research slices, this study complements previous Huizhou Village studies. It provides valuable information for the preservation of traditional villages and reveals the hidden rules, potential order, and social meaning of inter-village spaces.
