Study purpose. The aim of this study is to analyse differences in perfectionism and passion and how these variables interact and might be expected to affect performance in U21 and U23 soccer players.
...Materials and methods. A total of 60 healthy semi-professional soccer players (age: 21.57±1.95 years; height: 179.76±5.79 cm) participated in the study. The participants were divided into two equal groups, one with those players younger than 21 years old and the other including players aged 21–23. This study was descriptive with a cross-sectional design and used the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS) and Passion Scale questionnaires.
Results. A paired-samples t-test was used for defining differences as a repeated measures analysis (U21 Group and U23 Group). Additionally, a t-test with data from the FMPS revealed significant differences in perfectionism global score, concern over mistakes, parental expectations, parental criticism, doubts about actions and organization. The participants were shown to be a heterogeneous group in both perfectionism and passion, with moderate perfectionistic characteristics, except for the personal standards subscale, in which the opposite trend was found. According to the outcomes obtained, the U21 group shows significant values in terms of the level of perfectionism.
Conclusions. This research has highlighted the importance of addressing maladaptive perfectionism in interventions and support programs for athletes. Strategies such as promoting a growth mindset, encouraging self-compassion, and fostering a supportive and mastery-oriented environment have been suggested to help athletes manage perfectionistic tendencies and enhance their well-being and performance.
The multidimensional nature and the psychological aspects of perfectionism suggest that creativity could be affected by the two sides of perfectionism differently. The purpose of the current study is ...to explore the potential predictive powers of adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism on creativity. The study group consisted of 151 college students attending a university in İstanbul. The APS Perfectionism Scale and The Marmara Creative Thinking Dispositions Scale were administered to the participants as data collection tools. The findings revealed that there is a positive and significant relationship between adaptive perfectionism and creativity. On the other hand, the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and creativity as well as the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and adaptive perfectionism is significant and negative. In the regression analysis it was found out that the adaptive perfectionism predicts creativity positively and significantly (ß=.40; p<0.01), while maladaptive perfectionism predicts creativity significantly in a negative way.
Perfectionism is a powerful factor for school burnout, but the underlying mediating mechanism of this relationship remains unclear. To investigate the potential mediating roles of self-esteem and ...coping style in the association between perfectionism and school burnout among Chinese adolescents, a sample of 1222 middle school students was recruited. Path analysis showed that self-esteem and coping style partially mediated the relationship between perfectionism and school burnout. Specifically, maladaptive perfectionism exerted a positive indirect influence on school burnout through the mediators of self-esteem and task- and emotion-oriented coping styles. In contrast, adaptive perfectionism had a negative indirect effect on school burnout via these same mediators. Notably, self-esteem and emotion-oriented coping style had sequential mediating effects on the relations between the two dimensions of perfectionism and school burnout.

It has been suggested that maladaptive perfectionists are more prone to concern over their performance outcomes than adaptive perfectionists. Performance outcome evaluation is reflected in the ...amplitude of feedback-related negativity (FRN) in brain electroencephalography (EEG). Hence, the amplitude of the FRN after receiving unfavorable feedback indicating a negative performance outcome may reflect personality characteristics. In other words, EEG could be a better marker of personality characteristics than self-report measures. However, the FRN component has not yet been investigated between different types of perfectionists. In the present study, group differences in the FRN were examined between two groups of adaptive and maladaptive perfectionists and a group of non-perfectionists during a monetary gambling task. We observed a larger FRN amplitude for adaptive perfectionists than for maladaptive perfectionists. This finding is consistent with previous reports that reward prediction error is reflected in the amplitude of the FRN. This difference in FRN could be interpreted as the pessimistic outcome expectation biases in maladaptive perfectionists.

This study examines the impacts of adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism on the perceived task performance of employees and explores the moderating role of perceived organizational support (POS) in ...those relationships. By integrating the trait activation theory and the job demand-resources model (JD-R), we investigate whether POS as an organizational resource facilitates or constrains the effects of perfectionism traits on task performance. The data were gathered from 347 white-collar, full-time employees working in different sectors in Türkiye. The results of the moderated regression reveal only a significant interaction effect of POS with maladaptive perfectionism on task performance. In line with our predictions, when employees perceive higher levels of POS, the negative association between maladaptive perfectionism and task performance diminishes. However, the results did not support the interactive effects of adaptive perfectionism and POS on performance. The current study adds to a growing body of perfectionism literature and provides further support that POS plays a crucial role in mitigating the negative consequences of maladaptive perfectionism on employee task performance.
The purpose of this article is twofold. First, it aims to investigate the mediating role of family–work conflict (FWC) on the relationship between the dimensions of perfectionism (adaptive vs. ...maladaptive) and well-being, and second, it aims to explore whether gender moderates this mediated relationship. Data are gathered from 238 dual working and married employees working in different sectors. The moderated mediation analyses are conducted using PROCESS macro developed by Hayes and Preacher (2013). The findings reveal that FWC plays a critical mediating role in transmitting the effects of maladaptive perfectionism to well-being. Regarding it the moderated relationship, we find that the positive relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and FWC is stronger for men than it is for women. However, the effect of adaptive perfectionism on FWC is found to be stronger for women compared to that for men. We discuss these findings in relation to gender roles and FWC policies and research.
Perfectionism has been conceptualized as a personality variable that underlies a variety of psychological difficulties. Recently, however, theorists and researchers have begun to distinguish between ...two distinct types of perfectionism, one a maladaptive form that results in emotional distress, and a second form that is relatively benign, perhaps even adaptive. In this study, we compared varying models of the perfectionism construct using the best known measures of perfectionism. In a sample of 198 students, three competing models of perfectionism were examined using confirmatory factor analysis. A model that incorporated two factors, one corresponding to maladaptive perfectionism and the other adaptive perfectionism, was a better fit to the data than a unitary perfectionism model. We also examined the relations of the two types of perfectionism, Maladaptive Evaluative Concerns and Positive Striving, to a well known measure of psychological distress. Maladaptive Evaluative Concerns was more strongly associated with depression, anxiety, stress, and test taking anxiety. Overall, this study supports the validity of a distinction between two types of perfectionism, and points to the importance of this duality for measurement and research on perfectionism.
Purpose
This study aims to explore the mechanisms of adaptive perfectionism on employees’ taking charge (TC), the mediating role of work family enrichment and the moderating role of perceived ...organizational support (OS) in the relationship between adaptive perfectionism and employees’ TC.
Design/methodology/approach
This study is based on 305 knowledge workers working in diverse organizations in China to examine the hypotheses.
Findings
The results showed that adaptive perfectionism had a significant positive effect on employees’ TC. Both directions of work-family enrichment (WFE) and family-work enrichment (FWE) play a mediating role between adaptive perfectionism and employees’ TC. Perceived OS moderates the relationship between WFE/FWE and employees’ TC. Perceived OS moderates the indirect effects of adaptive perfectionism on employees’ TC through WFE and FWE.
Originality/value
This study explores the impact of adaptive perfectionism on employees’ TC, expands the scope of existing perfectionism research, enriches the research on adaptive perfectionism outcome variables and provides evidence and reference for follow-up research.
The relationship between sports practice and physical and mental health became an important issue during the COVID-19 pandemic, where keeping fit and exercising was one of the best and most popular ...ways to cope with the confinement situation. The aim of this study was to determine the relationships between perfectionism and resilient resources with psychological well-being, differentiating sports category, gender and experience in a sample of athletes during confinement in different countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. An incidental and cross-sectional random sampling method was designed (
= 583). The sample was analysed with three different instruments, evaluating perfectionism, resilience and psychological well-being patterns and comparing three groups with different levels of practice due to confinement (full reduction, moderate reduction and only access restrictions). Results show that both male and senior athletes were more organized, resistant to changes and focused their attention and efforts on their demands and potential. They were stimulated by obstacles that required more effort compared to U23, who reported higher concerns and lower organisational scores. Athletes who completely interrupted their sports dynamics showed higher indicators of perfectionism and performed worse in resilience and well-being. Despite this, age and the variability of the athletes' experiences proved to be relevant factors in an athlete's trajectory, and continued to represent a certain degree of balance in the face of COVID-19.
