This study attempted to investigate the potential constraints that the Yemeni undergraduates face in subtitling audiovisual materials. The challenges of English-Arabic subtitling are under three ...domains; linguistic, technical and attitudinal. University of Science and Technology (UST) is barely the benchmarking academic institution that gives training on subtitling. UST was perceived as an ideal place to curry out the study. A triangulation was the methodology of the paper. A questionnaire along with a test were administered and given to 38 participants. The results of the study declared that the linguistic domain is still taking the lead. The second domain was the technical challenges. The emotive or attitudinal constraints were the least challenging. The paper gave recommendations to overcome these constraints. Conclusion and recommendations of the study can be taken in other countries that undergo similar conditions.

The objective of this article is to analyze how different languages in the series Unorthodox convey information on characters’ identities, and whether, at the same time, the choice of language ...produces different effects on the film narrative itself. Since we are dealing with audiovisual products, in any full account of the story, the image must be considered as an essential factor affecting the audiences’ interpretation of the show. The article analyzes how multilingualism is rendered in its Spanish version and shows that different translation solutions may change how each character’s identity is perceived. We found that the main four languages of the series (English, Yiddish, German, and Hebrew) are used to convey different personal and social identities to each character. Besides, linguistic choices between Yiddish and English show the evolution of the main character towards freedom. Although multilingualism is hardly present in the visual channel, cultural references conveyed through images help the viewer to follow key shifts in the story.

Among the animated series that became very popular and witnessed tremendous success in the Arab world is the Japanese Detective Conan, which was first dubbed in 1998 and redubbed in 2013 to convey ...Islamic values. However, the re-dub did not attract wide viewership and remained infamous among the Arabic anime community. This study is an attempt to investigate the differences between the two versions with a particular emphasis on technical issues and moral and value systems and explore how viewers received the Islamic re-dub. The researchers analyzed the responses of 178 viewers to a structured open-ended questionnaire. The participants demonstrated that in the first dubbed version, the image resolution, voice clarity, and synchronization were of better quality. The content analysis showed that in the re-dub, some scenes were omitted, names were replaced with Arabic ones, and references to prohibited activities were changed to fit better into the Islamic culture. The study stresses the importance of taking viewer preferences and difficulties into account when adapting media content. The current study can be used in future adaptation attempts in related environments.
Voice-over is a mode of transfer in the audiovisual translation in which the original soundtrack is heard simultaneously in the background. The reason for the double-voice hearing is proof of the ...products' authenticity and translators' faithfulness to the target viewers. The technical factor of synchrony (adapting the length of the soundtrack, matching the original and target soundtracks, the soundtrack and visuals, and the soundtrack and body movements) raises the quality of voiced-over products. Voice-over is widely used in the translation of documentaries in many countries including Iran. The present study investigated documentary voice-over on Iran's national television from an isochrony perspective seeking to examine to what extent the international isochrony standards are followed and where the Iranian voice-over profession stands. For this purpose, a documentary was selected and analyzed based on framework triangulated by the researchers. The results revealed that, in practice, voice-over narrators adhered strongly to synchronization techniques in most segments of the selected documentary. The study demonstrates that documentary voice-over translation techniques, particularly the synchronization principles, are frequently followed on Iran's television, although with slight modifications they would even improve more.
The differences between Arab and English cultures make the task of Translating English advertisements into Arabic challenging. This study investigates the strategies used by translators to dub ...English advertisements into Arabic. Six English advertisements and their Arabic translation were compiled from YouTube and then compared their contents, Brand's name, and catchphrases. The findings showed that the translators opted for using various translation strategies such as cultural adaptation, substitution, loan, transliteration, explicitation, addition, omission, and paraphrasing. The analysis also revealed that translators sometimes use the literal translation approach to preserve the foreignness spirit and stay faithful to the original message. They also followed the free approach of translation to bridge the cultural gap. The study recommends future researchers to examine other advertisements in different domains.
