This paper contributes to eco-efficient and sustainable book binding production. Higher book binding manufacturing efficiency—with less waste and reduce energy consumption—has been achieved with ...higher inputs of natural biodegradable sources into graphic arts materials through the eco-labeled paper grades and the use of eco-advanced adhesive system solutions. Nowadays, scientific sources on non-toxic polymers and resins, combined with current scientific knowledge and production development, are closely related to sustainability. Hence, advanced and improved adhesive system solution technologies should fulfill the needs of suppliers and customers who are involved in the International Framework for ISO/TC130 workflows. These strategic partnerships provide possibilities in the context of “closed-loop recycling models”, which spark and advance the discussions of stakeholders. It is very important that the novel engineered biodegradable adhesive system solutions provide productivity-increasing and cost-effective solution performances by saving money and improving the performed binding activities. Without doubt, the task of the scientific community is to continue to provide responsive and comprehensive approaches to fulfilling stakeholders’ specific needs through standardized quality assurance, with the emphasis on book-binders.
Italian artist Luigi Serafini and American bookbinder Timothy Ely share the same aesthetics of communication in book art. Both authors conceive their works as a book format, producing a clash between ...the unreadable content of the books - otherworldly images combined with invented indecipherable codes - and their intelligible material and visual characteristics, that imitate existing artefacts. This study draws a comparison between these two artists' book production. It is my conviction that the books by Ely and Serafini convey the idea of a universal readability and can be interpreted as tools for accepting otherness.
Every book form – from China to West Africa, from Europe to Mesopotamia – requires a way to secure cohesion of its constituent elements and keep them together. Whereas codex binding, as it still ...appears in modern printed books, is a familiar device, a comparative view on how things have been kept together in historic and current manuscript cultures provides an eye-opening survey of the variety of strategies applied to tie and bind manuscripts.
Analysis of nineteenth-century, cloth-case publishers' bindings at Winterthur Library revealed starch-coated bookcloth colored with the toxic pigment "emerald green" (copper acetoarsenite). While ...this pigment was widely used in Victorian home goods and apparel, its use specifically in bookcloth has not been formally explored. A survey of bookcloth pigments was conducted to identify which toxic elements may be present in bookcloth and to determine how many bindings were colored with emerald green. English-language books at Winterthur published between 1837 and 1900 were analyzed with x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. When arsenic and copper were found together, Raman spectroscopy was used to confirm emerald green. The dataset was further expanded using The Library Company of Philadelphia's significant holdings of cloth-case publishers' bindings. Copper and arsenic were detected in 38 rare and circulating books in total. Based on this data, trends in emerald green bookcloth use include: consistently vivid green hue; stamped decoration; English and American imprints from 1840s to 1860s. Quantitative analysis revealed significant levels of arsenic in friable bookcloth colorant. Emerald green books in the Winterthur collection were rehoused in zip-top polyethylene bags with hazard labels and circulating books were moved into the access-controlled rare book collection.
The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we work, communicate, and transmit knowledge. Conservators, who work primarily with their hands, have had time to reflect on treatment practice, ...dissemination of information and siloing of knowledge in the Australian book conservation context. This paper presents a preliminary environmental survey examining the ways the conservation profession has adapted and developed our practices while working, learning, and networking from home. Case studies demonstrate that there is an increased appetite for learning and knowledge/skill sharing within the book conservation community where formal qualifications, reference material, and hands-on training are limited. Current avenues of book conservation training in Australia are assessed, and the risks to knowledge loss as a generation of bookbinders and conservators retire are considered. Through this exploration, the authors posit the need for a centralised hub for the book conservation specialism as a method of capturing published online content, using technology proactively to our advantage. This paper will address the questions of successful knowledge transmission during and post-Pandemic, the benefits and disadvantages of online learning, what we can do better and how isolation has enhanced communication and collaboration in a world where we are better connected, but further apart, than ever before.
