With the aim of observing to what extent intercultural contact is a predictor of cultural intelligence, and the relationship between cultural intelligence, type of intercultural contact, gender and education, descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted using the ANOVA and t-test. With a sample of 661 individuals, results show that intercultural contact is a predictor of cultural intelligence and that men and individuals who possess superior level studies present higher cultural intelligence means. Those who maintain intercultural contact with friends or family present superior cultural intelligence means in metacognitive and motivational dimensions and individuals who maintain an intercultural contact in professional environment present high score at the level of cognitive and behavioral dimensions. Keywords Intercultural contact; cultural intelligence; type of contact; gender; education.
Over the past decade, the cultural intelligence construct and its underlying dimensions have been used in a number of studies. Prior research has tested the determinants and outcomes of cultural ...intelligence, using pooled data from different countries and cultures, and has compared the results across contexts. However, these studies often disregarded measurement invariance, which is a necessary requirement for such analyses. We assess the measurement invariance of the commonly used four-dimensional cultural intelligence scale across five countries (China, France, Germany, Turkey, and the U.S.) by means of a composite model logic, using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Our results question the scale's dimensionality concerning China and France, and reveal an item set that is invariant across the other countries. Our findings indicate that researchers should be aware of the potential lack of measurement invariance regarding the standard measurement of cultural intelligence. They should therefore be cautious when comparing the results of cross-country and cross-cultural research.
Cultural intelligence (CQ), the capability by which expatriates, managers, and others involved in cross-cultural interactions function effectively in a globalized world, was introduced in 2002 and ...has garnered wide attention recently. In this paper, we present a detailed and up-to-date review of 142 empirical articles in the CQ research field. We first examine the concept of CQ, including its definition, structure, measurement, and validity. We then review the vast number of empirical studies that investigate the antecedents, development, direct and indirect effects, moderating effects, and aggregated effects of CQ, as well as qualitative studies. The analysis shows several issues that likely will be relevant to the research debate in the near future. These issues include investigations of (1) whether cultural intelligence is universal or culture-specific, (2) why objective measures that assess CQ are lacking, (3) to what extent a person can develop cultural intelligence, (4) to what extent there are dark sides to cultural intelligence, and (5) the role cultural intelligence plays as a predictor of individual and group performance. Addressing these questions may help us reveal the true potential of CQ in contemporary organizations and thus, affirm that the promise of CQ is more than just hype.
tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) are an emerging category of small non-coding RNAs that are generated from cleavage of mature tRNAs or tRNA precursors. The advance in high-throughput sequencing has ...contributed to the identification of increasing number of tRFs with critical functions in distinct physiological and pathophysiological processes. tRFs can regulate cell viability, differentiation, and homeostasis through multiple mechanisms and are thus considered as critical regulators of human diseases including cancer. In addition, increasing evidence suggest the extracellular tRFs may be utilized as promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for cancer liquid biopsy. In this review, we focus on the biogenesis, classification and modification of tRFs, and summarize the multifaceted functions of tRFs with an emphasis on the current research status and perspectives of tRFs in cancer.
Summary
Academic discussions on cultural intelligence (CQ) are now paying attention to their potential utilization from various angles. The field of study is expanded not only in business ...administration but also in psychology, education, tourism, communication, and arts. This is due to the widespread study of global communication competence in multicultural situations because of the deepening of globalization. In this paper, we try to find a way to utilize cultural intelligence model proposed by David Livermore. The aim is to develop education contents for the improvement of cultural intelligence of university students. The target is limited to university students and aims to develop education contents to enhance their cultural intelligence. The main purpose of the study was to measure and analyze the cultural intelligence of university students. For that, the level of cultural intelligence of Korean university freshmen was measured and analyzed. The individual level of the four areas constituting the cultural intelligence was identified, and the difference between the male and female was examined. At the same time, the differences in cultural intelligence were analyzed according to the duration of multicultural contact and experience in the case of foreign language lectures taught by foreigners. Finally, we analyzed how the correlation between the four areas that comprise cultural intelligence is occurring, and as a result, the content and results of this study are expected to be an important foundation for the direction of future development of education contents in universities.
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the role of interpersonal skills in getting ahead in one’s career.
Design/methodology/approach
The inferences have been drawn on the basis of ...available literature as well as author’s experiences and observations spread over two decades.
Findings
With the changing workplace from traditional to virtual office and now to work-from-home, the role of interpersonal skills has become even more critical. Across sectors, if you want to have a successful career, interpersonal skills are vital for getting ahead. The author emphasizes the need for continuous upskilling and reskilling of employees with respect to soft skills.
Originality/value
This paper intends to provide a viewpoint on a subject that is sometimes not taken as seriously as it should be. Often employees focus more on learning and upskilling their technical skills while neglecting their people skills. The author offers some valuable insights for business leaders to lay emphasis on employee’s communication and interpersonal skills so as to allow the firm to run smoothly and to make day-to-day functions effective and efficient. This would be a win-win situation for organizations as well as the employees.
This article describes a mixed methods research study of current Pennsylvania librarians to understand the phenomena of cultural intelligence within Pennsylvania libraries. The researcher surveyed ...Pennsylvania Library Association membership in September 2019. Survey participants took a cultural intelligence assessment, responded to qualitative questions, and addressed demographic questions. Overall, participants had varying levels of cultural intelligence, felt that cultural intelligence was important to their organizations and found value in its application. The results can inform library professionals and human resources about the importance of incorporation of cultural intelligence within everyday practices and communication with staff within libraries. Developing cultural intelligence through training and other activities will also impact the communities in which we serve. Best practices with cultural intelligence should be recorded and shared with other Pennsylvania libraries.
