Using fiction, the story introduces the essential role of leisure to bridge the realities of life and death. Facing death of a friend or your own engenders questions about the purpose of one's life, ...addressing unresolved relationships, and how to live well while dying. Josef Pieper's conceptualization of leisure as contemplating one's place in the universe and celebrating or affirming one's place in the cosmos is relevant to understanding this intersection. The story revolves around a wake, a practice of sitting with the dead and mourning/celebrating that dates to ancient times to highlight leisure as a companion for dying, death, and life. The emergence of death doulas and community-based deathcare suggests an interest in creating new or alternative rituals and leisure practices that sustain people during these transitional spaces-times. The short story interlaces experience, research, and historical scholarship to highlight leisure as already present and essential for living and dying.
The new Kirati religion founded by the spiritual leader and ‘national luminary’ Mahaguru Phalgunanda Lingden (1885–1949) is a unique blend of an ethnic tradition marked by shamanic practice and ...elements of Hinduism. Little is known about the ritual practice performed by the Mahaguru himself and his disciples. However, today, the principal successor, Atmananda Lingden, is propagating his version of the Satyahangma religion and building a large community of followers. Rituals are based on the Sāmjik Mundhum, a red book containing the canonical text. My contribution here will take a look at the making of this ritual tradition and the controversies that have resulted from different interpretations of Phalgunanda’s heritage. The biggest event in the year is the celebration of Phalgunanda’s birthday on Kartik 25 (ca 11 November). In eastern Nepal in particular, this is an event of great spiritual as well as political importance, as could be observed in 2018.
Myths are symbolic structures that influence the way meanings are created and the social world is interpreted. This study aims to understand how myths are sustained by play and focuses on the example ...of a seasonal ritual, namely Hıdrellez spring celebration, in Turkey. Hıdrellez celebration is a leisure activity characterized by festive events, rituals, and social practices. It also relates to human knowledge and practice concerning nature and the universe. The study adopts a qualitative research design based on interviews, as this is an exploratory study. The findings reveal that plays contributes to the continuation of myths via performances, leisure communities, embodiment, and fun. However, it is also evident that the sacred rituals of Hıdrellez are being commodified by the entertainment businesses in urban settings.
This introductory paper studies a class of real analytic functions on the upper half plane satisfying a certain modular transformation property. They are not eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and are ...quite distinct from Maass forms. These functions are modular equivariant versions of real and imaginary parts of iterated integrals of holomorphic modular forms and are modular analogues of single-valued polylogarithms. The coefficients of these functions in a suitable power series expansion are periods. They are related both to mixed motives (iterated extensions of pure motives of classical modular forms) and to the modular graph functions arising in genus one string perturbation theory.
In methylotrophic bacteria, which use one-carbon (C1) compounds as a carbon source, methanol is oxidized by pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ)-dependent methanol dehydrogenase (MDH) enzymes. ...Methylotrophic genomes generally encode two distinct MDHs, MxaF and XoxF. MxaF is a well-studied, calcium-dependent heterotetrameric enzyme whereas XoxF is a lanthanide-dependent homodimer. Recent studies suggest that XoxFs are likely the functional MDHs in many environments. In methanotrophs, methylotrophs that utilize methane, interactions between particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) and MxaF have been detected. To investigate the possibility of interactions between pMMO and XoxF, XoxF was isolated from the methanotroph

. The 1.85 Å resolution crystal structure reveals a La(III) ion in the active site, in contrast to the calcium ion in MxaF. The overall fold is similar to other MDH structures, but 5G-XoxF is a monomer in solution. An interaction between 5G-XoxF and its cognate pMMO was detected by biolayer interferometry, with a

value of 50 ± 17 μM. These results suggest an alternative model of MDH-pMMO association, in which a XoxF monomer may bind to pMMO, and underscore the potential importance of lanthanide-dependent MDHs in biological methane oxidation.
As the field of radical SAM enzymology has grown from a few examples in the 1990s to hundreds of thousands today, a fundamental question has remained: how does Nature use

This was a driving question when we first began studying pyruvate formate-lyase activating enzyme in 1993, and our journey for answers has brought us to many surprising discoveries, from the direct coordination of SAM to a unique iron in a 4Fe-4S cluster, to our recent discovery of an organometallic intermediate and our ability to quantitatively produce and characterize the long-sought 5′-deoxyadenosyl radical intermediate. These adventures and what we have learned along the way about this fundamentally novel chemistry is described in this review.
