This collection of papers addresses methodological issues in corpus linguistics and recent trends in the field. The authors discuss the multitude of data types that can be collected for computational ...analysis, tracing grammatical features from a diachronic perspective, how corpora can be used to observe discourse patterns in the press and other mediums such as YouTube, and using an interdisciplinary approach to study large compilations of texts.
Abstract
Situating journalism as a cultural practice charged with delivering valid accounts of the world necessitates a theory of metajournalistic discourse to explain how meanings around journalism ...develop. Through metajournalistic discourse, various actors inside and outside of journalism compete to construct, reiterate, and even challenge the boundaries of acceptable journalistic practices and the limits of what can or cannot be done. Based on the premises that journalism is variable, reliant on context, and produced through social relationships, this article develops a theory of metajournalistic discourse that connects three components—actors, sites/audiences, and topics—to processes of definition making, boundary work, and legitimation.
Abstract This paper proposes a methodological framework that integrates poststructuralist Discourse Theory (DT), Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) and Corpus Linguistics (CL). While previous research ...has discussed potential compatibility between combinations of these approaches, there have been few attempts to bring them all together into a cohesive research programme. Fostering dialogue between diverse methodological perspectives can facilitate multi-level analysis to capture the complex dynamics of sociopolitical issues. In this vein, the article presents the methodological tree, an analogy used to illustrate how these traditions may come together to complement one another. This foundation lays the groundwork for practical application in discursive analysis, with a flexible analytical structure proposed and examples provided to illustrate its implementation. It is hoped that the article can stimulate further discussion around how DT, CDS and CL can be brought together to harness their strengths.

We argue that the processes underlying institutionalization have not been investigated adequately and that discourse analysis provides a coherent framework for such investigation. Accordingly, we ...develop a discursive model of institutionalization that highlights the relationships among texts, discourse, institutions, and action. Based on this discursive model, we propose a set of conditions under which institutionalization processes are most likely to occur, and we conclude the article with an exploration of the model's implications for other areas of research.
Reflexive language - the capacity of language to speak about itself - is unique to human languages yet little is known of its use in actual dialogue. Fundamental features of language are manifest in ...dialogic speech and in lingua francas. Both are taken on board in this book, which radically widens our conception of reflexivity in discourse. Reflexivity, or metadiscourse, is central to successful communication. It is also vital in understanding academic argumentation, essential to academic self-understanding, and at the same time it has wide applications.
In Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) and in other linguistics oriented scholarly journals we now see more research which draws upon multimodality as part of carrying out analyses of how texts make ...meaning, in order to draw out the ideologies which they carry. However, much of multimodality is itself based closely on one theory of language called Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). And despite calls from some scholars there has been no real interrogation of the concepts and models drawn from this theory as regards how suitable they are both for analyzing different forms of communication and for answering concrete research questions of the nature asked in CDS. In this paper we assess the core principles, taken from SFL into multimodality. Using examples we consider which are more or less suitable for the kinds of work we do in CDS. We make a case that SFL has a narrow notion of 'texts' and a weak notion of context. We show how we can address such problems to deal with what we call the 'materiality' of multimodal communication.
For a diachronic discourse analysis: the evolution of the functio- ning of parentheses in parliamentary accounts between the Revolution and the present time.
This paper falls within the theoretical framework of discourse analysis and is based in particular on the work of Foucault, who considers that discourse is not the reflection of a reality independent of it, but that it constructs and configures social practices. The work of the discourse analyst is to put into perspective the discursive forms specific to these configurations in order to "denaturalize" what is often self-evident. This is why it seems necessary to develop a diachronic discourse analysis that allows precisely this putting into perspective. This paper proposes an application to the accounts of parliamentary debates between the Revolution and the present time. It is a question here of studying in particular the changes in the use and the discursive functioning of parentheses. We make the hypothesis that the relationship that the parliamentary institution intends to establish with the citizen is partly constructed in the kind of institution that is the record, that it can be read in the forms used and in parti- cular in the use of parentheses.
This edited volume offers new insights into contemporary political discourses in Slavic speaking countries by focusing on discursive and linguistic means deployed in relevant genres, such as ...parliamentary discourse, commemorative and presidential speeches, mediated communication, and literal and philosophical essays. The depth of the linguistic analysis reflects different levels of linkage between language and social practice constituting the discourse. The theoretical and methodological approaches discussed range from interactional pragmatics over corpus linguistics to CDA. The chapters contain original language material in Russian, Polish, Czech, Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian, and the authors address issues such as the affiliation to different political and social groups within parliamentary settings, national identity, gender and minorities, as well as cultural memory and reconciliation.
The book introduces a new perspective on discursive categorisations in societies. We suggest a shift from minority/majority differentiations towards an analysis of marginalising and centralising ...discourses which leave room for contradictions and renegotiations of belonging. The interdisciplinary contributions study contradictory belonging to and within religious and national groups from the 18th century until today in diverse regional settings.
