Raymundo Faoro, deceased in 2003, was one of the pioneers in the use of Max Weber's sociology for interpreting the formation of the Brazilian political system. In Os Donos do Poder (The Owners of ...Power), first published in 1958, Faoro launched the thesis that ever since its colonial period Brazil has always been dominated by a ''bureaucratic stratum'' with its origins in the peculiar characteristics of the Portuguese state, thus contradicting the previously dominant view that Brazil had experienced a feudal past dominated by traditional rural power. He thus opened the way for the Brazilian political system to be studied and interpreted in terms of its own political and institutional variables and no longer merely in terms of class interests and conflicts. However, according to Faoro, this domination by the bureaucratic stratum was a perennial, immutable characteristic of Brazil, a view that ended up limiting his analyses, even as he became an activist against all forms of Brazilian authoritarianism.

Trois émissions du même ouvrage sortent de presse, la dernière sous un nouveau titre et avec un autre nom d'auteur! Pierre Maes publie également d'autres ouvrages sur l'Afrique centrale: des traductions néerlandaises de Stanley et un roman populaire, Les Mystères du Congo. La partie des Belges dans l'Afrique centrale, écrite par Charles de Martrin-Donos, se révèle être pour une bonne part un plagiat de Quatre années au Congo du Français Charles Jeannest. // ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: At the creation of the Congo Independent State, Pierre Maes published in several instalments, then in three volumes, Les Belges dans l'Afrique centrale. In the beginning this was written by Adolf Burdo, then (when Burdo failed to respect the editorial policy -i.e. the colonial propaganda- of editorial house), by Charles de Martrin-Donos. Three prints of the same work were published, the last one under a new title and with a different author's name. Pierre Maes also published other works on Central Africa: Dutch translations of Stanley's books and a popular work of fiction, Les Mystères du Congo. The section of Les Belges dans l'Afrique Centrrale written by Charles de Martrin-Donos is proven to be based on plagiarism from Quatre années au Congo by the author François Charles Jeannest.
