The paper is motivated by real problems concerning tasks assignment to workers in medium-sized upholstered furniture plants managed using the Demand-Driven Manufacturing. Although the methodology was ...developed for furniture plants it can be applied to other types of production plants. We involve competence coefficients, which describe the level of the worker’s skills or capabilities to perform a specific task. The competence coefficients are also used to block the possibility of assigning the given task to a worker that has no skills to do it. Additionally, we involve a dummy worker to the model which guarantees the existence of a solution to the problem. We present and discuss Integer Linear Programming Models for the posted problem that are closely related to the Generalized Assignment Problem. We also discuss the potential use of the presented methodology to solve real-life problems related to production management.
Purpose:
Innovation has been traditionally considered as a generator of competitiveness. Despite the increasing importance of innovation in the literature, there is no agreement about its ...antecedents. This clearly makes difficult and risky for the managers to choose suitable strategies to promote and develop successful innovations. The present research attempts to contribute to this important area by providing some critical insights on the origins of the innovative behaviour of the firms; namely: market orientation and entrepreneurial proclivity.
Design/methodology/approach:
To reach our goal we used in-depth case research methodology in furniture firms from Italy, Spain and Finland.
Findings:
The article contributes to the understanding of why some firms are more innovative than others. The study shows some evidence that market orientation and the entrepreneurship can be considered as antecedents of innovation.
Research limitations/implications:
We provide evidence that the furniture industry shows a tendency to innovate based on its market orientation along with its entrepreneurial proclivity probably due to the fact that it is a traditional, non-globalized low-tech sector. Future studies might also address other variables related to different competitive settings.
Practical implications:
This work presents direct implications for companies aiming at improving their innovation capabilities. First, it is recommended that entrepreneurial firms should promote a market orientation philosophy, and second, they also need the top management commitment in terms of people and financial resources to achieve its goals.
Originality/value:
This article offers an insight to explain why some companies are more successful at starting and developing innovation than others. The finding that a successful innovation profile is related to entrepreneurship and the market orientation of the company represents an interesting contribution to the management of firms.

This article analyzes the behavior of surface finish and pressing time in glued pieces of eucalyptus wood. The importance of the study lies in verifying the influence of two variables (surface finish ...and pressing time) on the gluing of wood pieces for the furniture industry over time. For this purpose, the quality of adhesion of Eucalyptus urograndis wood pieces with polyvinyl acetate adhesive and the behavior of the wood to shear in the glue line are evaluated. It was necessary to produce test specimens according to the ABNT-NBR 7190 standard; three different surface finishes were evaluated on the faces to be adhered and three different cold pressing times, a variable that has not been analyzed in previous studies. It was possible to determine the shear resistance in the glue line and also to observe the percentage of wood failure when performing the destructive test on the test specimen 1 year after being glued. The highest shear strength was obtained for test specimens without surface finish and with a pressing time of 24 hours. With the results obtained in this study, the optimal surface finish and pressing time to be used in the furniture industry is evidenced.

The wood furniture industry has a strong presence in Canada, where it employs over 100,000 workers. Because of the extensive number of manual tasks required in this industry, several studies have been undertaken to characterize the health and safety risk factors to which these workers are exposed, such as awkward postures, repetitive movements and the application of undue force. However, very little research has been done on workers’ exposure to vibration from portable orbital sanders, one of the most common tools used in this industry. Vibration is responsible for a specific occupational disease called vibration syndrome, but is also recognized as a risk factor that increases the prevalence of more common work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). This study proposed to determine the level of vibration to which sanders of furniture parts are exposed, and to analyze its impact on the risk of WMSDs. The results show that the level of vibration to which the workers are exposed is well above acceptable levels defined by recognized standards and directives and that this vibration is combined with many other risk factors, thus representing a risk for the development of WMSDs.
