This cutting-edge collection of essays showcases the work of some of the most influential theorists of the past thirty years as they grapple with the question of how literature should be treated in ...contemporary theory. The contributors challenge trends that have recently dominated the field--especially those that emphasize social and political issues over close reading and other analytic methods traditionally associated with literary criticism. Written especially for this collection, these essays argue for the importance of aesthetics, poetics, and aesthetic theory as they present new and stimulating perspectives on the directions which theory and criticism will take in the future.
In addition to providing a selection of distinguished critics writing at their best, this collection is valuable because it represents a variety of fields and perspectives that are not usually found together in the same volume. Michael Clark's introduction provides a concise, cogent history of major developments and trends in literary theory from World War II to the present, making the entire volume essential reading for students and scholars of literature, literary theory, and philosophy.
In Mexico, women’s participation in sports are influenced by gender differences that can damage, both access to sport, such as social, family, and political support, affecting their sporting ...development. The aim of the study was to analyze the perception of women's participation in Mexican sports; as a complementary objective, a scale of attitudes towards women's participation in sports was validated through the psychometric analysis of the instrument. 884 young people participated, in three stages: 250 for the exploratory analysis and 634 for the confirmatory analysis of the scale, as well as statistical inferences. The Perception of the Relationship between Women and Sport questionnaire was adapted and complemented with self-developed items. The analysis of principal axes generated three factors that explained 50.18% of the total variance of the scale; a Cronbach's alpha greater than .80 was obtained, and the correlation by the method by halves was .67. The confirmatory analysis obtained a model that showed acceptable goodness-of-fit indices: = 147.80 (48 df, p < .01); CFI = .95; IFI = .95; NFI = .93 and RMSA = .05. The scales of social perception and women's access to sport presented differences based on gender (p < .05). The results confirmed the factorial structure of the scale, being valid for future research. In addition, they have a lower perception of social acceptance and access for women in Mexican sports compared to men.
Over two decades have passed since Im and Meleis proposed "gender-sensitive theories" as a category of nursing theories in 2001. Since then, the global conditions of women and minoritized identities ...across the various spectra of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sexual characteristics (SOGIESC) have changed. Moreover, feminist theorizing has evolved, prompting the need to update how nurses theorize and research the interactions of gender and health in their practice. This discursive essay aims to (1) provide a summary of Im and Meleis' characterization and guidelines in the development of gender-sensitive theories in nursing and present exemplars that use these guidelines; (2) assess the gender-sensitive nursing theory guidelines in terms of gender-responsiveness; and (3) expand the transformative potential of gender-sensitive theorizing in nursing by proposing Diverse SOGIESC-Transformative Theories. Diverse SOGIESC-Transformative Theories include three additional aspects to enhance the transformative potential of gender-responsive theorizing in nursing: inclusion of diverse SOGIESC, elaboration of intersectionality, and consideration of men and masculinities.
The overcompensation thesis posits that men react to gender insecurities by demonstrating their masculinity in extreme ways, some of which include highly gendered forms of consumer behavior known as ...male compensatory consumption. Though such consumption can be relatively benign, even healthy and positive, several forms of male compensatory behavior might harm public safety, the environment, and social accord. Support for the thesis exists, but is not overwhelming and further research is needed. This article approaches compensatory consumption in the United States from a historical perspective. It presents evidence from four separate periods – circa 1900, the 1930s, the 1950s, and circa 2000 – showing cultural continuities and change in the meaning of masculinity, but also similarities and differences in the perceived threats, the groups of men most affected, and their responses. These historical findings provide macromarketing insights into the societal consequences of market behavior.
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is one of the most significant social issues affecting the world, and just as in many other countries, GBV is pervasive in South Africa, where cultural norms and ...gender-based customs and traditions serve to condone and reinforce abusive practices. According to Article 13 of the Istanbul Convention, a preventive intervention requires heightened awareness as a first step in changing attitudes and behaviour that perpetuate the different forms of GBV. Hence, this study explores how awareness-raising can be effectively used as a preventive strategy to induce change in attitudes and behaviour associated with gender-based violence (GBV). Firstly, a systematic literature review was conducted to identify, select, and critically appraise existing empirical studies on GBV in South Africa. The systematic review used PRISMA guidelines for literature selection and Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) data extraction form to extract relevant data. The findings from the systematic review were described using a summary table, which reveals the different forms of GBV, the overarching causes and the contributing factors to GBV in South Africa. As this is a preliminary study expected to lead into future studies, relevant secondary data, including previous empirical studies, were reviewed to explore how gamification can be employed for awareness campaigns that challenge persistent myths, prejudices, and stereotypes and disrupt different pathways that lead to GBV. Finally, the study provides a structure for the future experimental study where an interactive awareness-raising game will be developed. This paper also stimulates new research directions on the potential of gamification for social change.

This article is based on qualitative sociological research of ten heterosexual couples in which the female partner of the couple is a schoolteacher in the educational area in and around Lyon, France ...and who for professional reasons, is obliged to have separate weekday accommodations near her workplace and separate from her partner. The article studies the impact of the women having dual residency on the life of the couple. It also categorizes the couples into three types according to the ways the couples adapt to their situations. This study, which was originally conducted for a master’s thesis, indeed uses a small sampling size. However, the findings are significant as they provide new insights on female bi-residency to the field of social science in the category of work-life balance. This study explores various topics such as the couples’ living arrangements, the evolution of their parental plans, and their social class and gender relations. This qualitative study effectively shows that the management of these situations is a family affair.
This article looks back at 20 years of feminist/gender theory in Organization. In these years a very rich variety of articles has drawn on feminist and gender perspectives. This suggests that ...Organization is a welcome site for exploring feminist and gender theories and their contribution to critical analysis of organizations. However, the more theoretically sophisticated work that is to be found in feminist and gender studies has not yet been explored in much depth. There is unfilled potential here. The article looks forward to the next decade by discussing a small selection from the treasure house of feminist theorists and concerns that could offer rich insights for management and organization theory. There are many others; this discussion introduces theorists who will be new to some readers, and might provoke more general interest in feminist thought.
The article deals with the document 'Male and Female He Created Them: Toward a Path of Dialogue on the Question of Gender Theory in Education', published by the Congregation for Catholic Education in ...June 2019. The document is a guideline for Catholic schools, which they can apply to control and moderate the discussion on gender issues at the level of local churches and educational institutions. The article presents several worldwide responses to the document chiefly in the Catholic media, and then provides a rhetorical analysis and critique of its content. The analysis reveals some of the text's rhetorical devices, including labelling, the self-referentiality typical of Church documents, and inconsistencies arising from attempts to balance its message, reflecting the conflicting loyalties of representatives of the church hierarchy since the Second Vatican Council. The article then carries out a more general critique of the Roman Catholic discourse on gender, which plays a significant role in fuelling the contemporary culture wars. This critique reveals the Church's lack of self-reflection on its position and the arbitrary nature of its interpretations of gender related phenomena. Finally, it also highlights the political nature of the Church's gender discourse, which seeks to uphold the status quo of the Church's power structure.
This essay intends to provide specific recommendations aiming at the crystallization of the transversality of gender theory amongst the pedagogical courses of the common majors of the Department of ...Educology of Universidad Nacional (UNA). To achieve that, the axes and thematic contents of the following courses are revised: Teacher Development and Professional Career Scenarios, Costa Rican Development and Educational Models, Human Development and Learning Theories, Seminar on Pedagogical Education: Pedagogy and Educational Processes, Introduction to Educational Processes, and Pedagogical Mediation for Inclusive Education. A series of recommendations are suggested to modify the syllabi of those courses, achieving that those students enrolled in Education with Specialization on Secondary Education are given a teaching process which enables them to analyze their educational practice from gender and intersectionality. It was opted for micro-breaks where the teaching staff does not need to have extensive training in gender to understand and apply the suggested elements, but only social sensitivity and a desire to transform the environment for a more just and egalitarian one. As the next thematic axis, it is urged to continue proposing recommendations such as these in other academic units in order to broaden the mainstreaming of this theory throughout the academic offerings of UNA.
