This paper examines the current status of home economics education (school educationrelated to home economics) in the Kingdom of Bhutan. Results indicate that home economics has not been introduced ...as an independent subject into the school curriculum in Bhutan’s school education, and that home economics contents, such as family, nutrition, childcare, consumerism, and the environment are included in other traditional subjects, such as science, social studies, and environmental studies. It could not be concluded that these subjects complement the content of home economics education. Based on the above considerations, as urbanization progresses in Bhutan and the need for life skills learned through home economics increases, it is recommended that home economics be introduced as an individual subject into the school curriculum and enhanced in a way that suits Bhutan’s actual state of affairs.
Food, cooking, and eating are commonly used as contexts or legitimations to teach and communicate science. However, for teaching to have contextual credibility, the relationship between subject and ...context is a relevant area of study. The present contribution describes an analysis of curricula from three Nordic countries shedding light on conditions for interdisciplinarity and/or curricular integration between the subjects science/chemistry on the one side, and home economics on the other. A two-phase documentary analysis was conducted on curricula from Finland, Norway, and Sweden from 2006 to 2020, revealing substantial potential for interdisciplinary collaboration and/or curricular integration. This is seen both in common declarative knowledge content ('declarative knowledge overlap') and, more interestingly, meeting points between subject-dependent practices and ways of thinking ('transfer of practices and ways of thinking'). The second inductive phase produced 11 themes common to the subjects. Possibilities and challenges are discussed in relation to the subjects' epistemologies and ontologies, as well as practitioners' competencies, attitudes, and creativity for subject boundary-crossing. Consequently, we conceptualise teachers' roles as lying in the span between 'teacher as polymath' and 'teacher as collaborator'. The present work also provides a instrument for exploring curricular conditions for interdisciplinarity between subjects on a more general basis.
Political science research into the determinants and consequences of who was taught what, when, and how in public schools is rare. One challenge encountered by researchers is that structured and ...detailed (historical) comparative data about curricula is limited, also in Switzerland. We contribute to closing this gap by introducing HESSS, a novel dataset on the provision of home economics education (“Hauswirtschaftsunterricht”) in Switzerland in ten German‐speaking cantons for vocational‐ and university‐track secondary schools since 1980 and 1991, respectively. Our dataset can help scholars explore variation in home economics education over time and across cantons, and facilitate research on the Swiss educational system. In this research note, we outline the main features of the data and illustrate how they can be used in two applications: (i) tracking the switch from gender‐segregated to co‐educated home economics classes across cantons; and (ii) describing the impact of budget cuts on home economics in the canton of Zurich.
