The most common measure of waiting time is the overall expected waiting time for service. However, in service networks the perception of waiting may also depend on how it is distributed among ...different stations. Therefore, reducing the probability of a long wait at any station may be important in improving customers' perception of service quality. In a single-station queue it is known that the policy that minimizes the waiting time and the probability of long waits is nonidling. However, this is not necessarily the case for queueing networks with several stations. We present a family of threshold-based policies (TBPs) that strategically idle some stations. We demonstrate the advantage of strategically idling by applying TBP in a network with two single-server queues in tandem. We provide closed form results for the special case where the first station has infinite capacity and develop efficient algorithms when this is not the case. We compare TBPs with the nonidling and Kanban policies, and we discuss when a TBP is advantageous. Using simulation, we demonstrate that the analytical insights for the two-station case hold for a three-station serial queue as well.
From the assumption of the CPC-16 the cost account was forced to give more attention to the aspects related with the theoretical capacity, real and normal of the production, since the knowledge of ...these is required to investigate the cost to be attributed to the stocked or sold products. In this way, it was established as general objective to measure the idleness, by comparative form, by UEP, ABC and TDABC methods in a small company context. The data analyses allowed the following results: some units cost value determined by the three methods result different if determined by the original conception of these; in the three methods is possible to identify the otiose production to assign it monetary value and verify the corresponding percentage about the installed capacity.

This article analyses Ricardo Talesnik's play and film (directed by Fernando Ayala) La fiaca
Idleness
and its critique of the notion of work. Talesnik denounces how modern disciplinary institutions ...form the workforce and a way-of-life-to-work. He questions the work-system by critiquing the commodity-form, standardised time represented in the money-form, worker subjectivity as a national citizen, and Schuld (debt/guilt). Talesnik's critique is developed when the play's main character performs a "Duchamp-like" strike by refusing to go to work. When analysed with Marx's and Foucault's theories of production and power, La fiaca could be read as a play that supports the abolition of work to question modern life under late capitalism. Therefore, what this play effectively critiques is the commodification of everyday life, which leaves no option but to create another way of life by interrupting the process of capitalist production of value and questioning the primacy of labour. Talesnik's play shows the coercive forces of the capitalist mode of production, but also the institutional framework built to correct anyone who dares to challenge it. This makes La fiaca a crucial intervention that helps us understand current post-work criticism and the present tension between work and social reproduction in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This essay argues that idleness as play and leisure would be recognised as an ideal over game playing in Bernard Suits' Utopia. Idleness is unaccountably overlooked as an ideal by Suits, as is the ...problem that his description of game playing is an anachronism, pushing his Utopians into a pre-Utopian condition. There is room for playing games in an idle Utopia but in a less prominent and more restricted role. Idleness as play and leisure is not defended as the sole ideal of Utopian existence though it is possibly that. Rather, it is presented as a compelling and preferable ideal for Suits' Utopians, thus refuting his claim that game playing is 'the only possible' ideal of human existence in Utopia.
The interface between an emergency department and internal wards is often a hospital's bottleneck. Motivated by this interaction in an anonymous hospital, we analyze queueing systems with ...heterogeneous server pools, where the pools represent the wards, and the servers are beds. Our queueing system, with a single centralized queue and several server pools, forms an inverted-
V
model. We introduce the randomized most-idle (RMI) routing policy and analyze it in the quality- and efficiency-driven regime, which is natural in our setting. The RMI policy results in the same server fairness (measured by idleness ratios) as the longest-idle-server-first (LISF) policy, which is commonly used in call centers and considered fair. However, the RMI policy utilizes only the information on the number of idle servers in different pools, whereas the LISF policy requires information that is unavailable in hospitals on a real-time basis.

Confinement is an experiment in procrastination. It used to be a vice, close to acedia, but we now take it as irrational. But it's not clearly so. Procrastination is indeed vicious when a philosopher ...delays permanently explaining what his theses are. Derrida is a case in point.
This paper addresses representations of idleness in the fiction of Hanokh Bartov while describing the historical privatization process that Israel went through as its idea of freedom radically ...changed. Following recent Marxist critiques of modern Hebrew literature, it shows that in Bartov's prose, idleness functions as the image of unattainable freedom - an image that changes as Israel moves on from the statist decades of the 1950s to the neoliberal era beginning around the 1980s. Accordingly, the article demonstrates how the image of idleness reveals contradictions inhabiting each era's ideological structure. It does so by engaging "idleness" not as ahistorical and abject nonwork, but as an ahistorical, ideological concept that both derives from social relations and reflects them. Starting with Sesh knafayim le-ehad Each Had Six Wings (1954), this article will show how the Israeli prose of each period of time dealt with the disappearance of a utopic imagination of freedom in favor of the project of a heteronomous political making of capitalist forms of production. Here, Idleness functions as the image of the inevitable future of capitalism without a national project. Moving onto the almost unexplored "Tikuney Itzhak" Isaac's Corrections (1980), the article will explore the culmination of this process and the total privatization and moralization of the once-political Zionist subject.
Nowadays, service function chaining (SFC) becomes more and more widespread and profound to implement flexible and economical virtual network infrastructures for the Internet of Things (IoT). With the ...benefits of SFC, the IoT service providers can steer massive traffic through a sequence of heterogeneous virtual network function instances based on their business logic. SFC is viewed as an attractive solution for building virtualized IoT-dedicated network. However, the SFC orchestration in IoT is still a challenge problem. Existing work usually focuses on the performance guarantee while ignoring the issue of resource idleness. To meet the sharp increase in IoT traffic amounts and the diversification of IoT traffic requirements, it is necessary to implement the performance and resource aware SFC orchestration system. Motivated by this, we propose a novel linear programming model and an effective approximation optimization algorithm for SFC orchestration, in order to achieve performance guarantee while avoiding resource idleness. Based on the proposed model and algorithm, a new prototype system named performance and resource aware orchestration system of SFC for IoT (PRSFC-IoT) is built upon OpenStack for online SFC orchestration. A large number of simulation experiments show that the PRSFC-IoT outperforms existing solutions for SFC orchestration in IoT.
