In 1834 and 1835, ten plates based on illustrations by ‘Miss Young’ and the ‘Hon. Miss Norton’ were published in Curtis's Botanical Magazine to illustrate texts prepared by Richard Thomas ...Lowe and sent through his friend William Jackson Hooker. Mary Young is listed in the Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturists Including plant collectors, flower painters and garden designers, for this contribution and the illustrations in Lowe's History of Fishes of Madeira, as ‘companion to Miss Norton’. No other contributions of these illustrators are mentioned, and little is known about them. Here we present more information concerning these two illustrators and their part in Lowe's work on the flora and fish fauna of Madeira.
Storyline visualization techniques have progressed significantly to generate illustrations of complex stories automatically. However, the visual layouts of storylines are not enhanced accordingly ...despite the improvement in the performance and extension of its application area. Existing methods attempt to achieve several shared optimization goals, such as reducing empty space and minimizing line crossings and wiggles. However, these goals do not always produce optimal results when compared to hand-drawn storylines. We conducted a preliminary study to learn how users translate a narrative into a hand-drawn storyline and check whether the visual elements in hand-drawn illustrations can be mapped back to appropriate narrative contexts. We also compared the hand-drawn storylines with storylines generated by the state-of-the-art methods and found they have significant differences. Our findings led to a design space that summarizes (1) how artists utilize narrative elements and (2) the sequence of actions artists follow to portray expressive and attractive storylines. We developed iStoryline, an authoring tool for integrating high-level user interactions into optimization algorithms and achieving a balance between hand-drawn storylines and automatic layouts. iStoryline allows users to create novel storyline visualizations easily according to their preferences by modifying the automatically generated layouts. The effectiveness and usability of iStoryline are studied with qualitative evaluations.

Objective
In the evolving landscape of medical research and radiology, effective communication of intricate ideas is imperative, with visualizations playing a crucial role. This study explores the ...transformative potential of ChatGPT4, a powerful Large Language Model (LLM), in automating the creation of schematics and figures for radiology research papers, specifically focusing on its implications for musculoskeletal studies.
Materials and methods
Deploying ChatGPT4, the study aimed to assess the model’s ability to generate anatomical images of six large joints—shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle. Four variations of a text prompt were utilized, to generate a coronal illustration with annotations for each joint. Evaluation parameters included anatomical correctness, correctness of annotations, aesthetic nature of illustrations, usability of figures in research papers, and cost-effectiveness. Four panellists performed the assessment using a 5-point Likert Scale.
Results
Overall analysis of the 24 illustrations encompassing the six joints of interest (4 of each) revealed significant limitations in ChatGPT4’s performance. The anatomical design ranged from poor to good, all of the illustrations received a below-average rating for annotation, with the majority assessed as poor. All of them ranked below average for usability in research papers. There was good agreement between raters across all domains (ICC = 0.61).
Conclusion
While LLMs like ChatGPT4 present promising prospects for rapid figure generation, their current capabilities fall short of meeting the rigorous standards demanded by musculoskeletal radiology research. Future developments should focus on iterative refinement processes to enhance the realism of LLM-generated musculoskeletal schematics.
Processing Web-based health information can be difficult, especially for people with low health literacy. Presenting health information in an audiovisual format, such as animation, is expected to ...improve understanding among low health literate audiences.
The aim of this paper is to investigate what features of spoken health animations improve information recall and attitudes and whether there are differences between health literacy groups.
We conducted an online experiment among 231 participants aged 55 years or older with either low or high health literacy. A 2 (spoken vs written text) x 2 (illustration vs animation) design was used. Participants were randomly exposed to one of the four experimental messages, all providing the same information on colorectal cancer screening.
The results showed that, among people with low health literacy, spoken messages about colorectal cancer screening improved recall (P=.03) and attitudes (P=.02) compared to written messages. Animations alone did not improve recall, but when combined with spoken text, they significantly improved recall in this group (P=.02). When exposed to spoken animations, people with low health literacy recalled the same amount of information as their high health literate counterparts (P=.12), whereas in all other conditions people with high health literacy recalled more information compared to low health literate individuals. For people with low health literacy, positive attitudes mediated the relationship between spoken text and the intention to have a colorectal cancer screening (b=.12; 95% CI 0.02-0.25).
We conclude that spoken animation is the best way to communicate complex health information to people with low health literacy. This format can even bridge the information processing gap between audiences with low and high health literacy as the recall differences between the two groups are eliminated. As animations do not negatively influence high health literate audiences, it is concluded that information adapted to audiences with low health literacy suits people with high health literacy as well.
