Although numerous research projects have examined the lives of general education teachers, relevant studies in ESL/EFL are rare. The present study intends to fill this research gap, focusing on ...Taiwanese EFL teachers’ perceptions of the impact of the political, economic, and educational contexts on their lives. Thirty-eight EFL teachers in Taiwan, from diverse backgrounds, were involved in the study. Results showed that political contexts, such as divergent ideologies, and Taiwan’s capricious cross-strait relations with China, had influenced teachers’ careers. Economic contexts such as the economic depression, the M-shaped income distribution, and the relocation of labor-intensive industries to China have caused certain English language teaching markets to shrink and have had an impact on the life stories of EFL teachers. Educational contexts including the boom in universities and teacher education programs have also altered EFL teachers’ career paths. Overall, this study demonstrates that external contexts significantly affect some EFL teachers’ lives. More research can be conducted in different countries to shed light on this issue.
In this essay, we present part of a research from which gender issues have emerged as conditioning elements of schooling trajectory, enabling the theme about the origins of inequality between genders ...in class society and how this panorama reveals woman’s devaluated condition operating society today. This reflection has emerged by a research conducted in 2013 with a group of women returning to school to join a course after a few years away from studies. In this research, the life stories of these women were heard and analyzed in order to identify their perception and expectations about their return to school, as well as to understand the various aspects that influenced, throughout their lives, their education development. In this study, we identify the difficulties they’ve encountered in the performance of their professional lives, and in addition we situate women in the labor market by noticing not only their feminine condition, but also conditions linked to ethnic nuances, race, age and social class. Maternity appears forcefully in the reported stories, turning it into a research category and reinforcing the need for further development of gender studies. The role of women was built upon a patriarchal society and although currently the equality concept is widespread, it is still not a reality in most gender relations.

This article uses data from a 3-year multisite ethnographic research study of gangs within an English city, to explore the different ways that “gang culture” shapes the victimization experiences and ...everyday lives of (young) women. Victims of lethal gang violence in Research City are almost exclusively young men, rendering invisible the ways in which gangs have an impact on the lives of women living in neighborhoods with a gang presence. The article also discusses how the adoption of a transdisciplinary approach could be useful in developing a holistic picture of the impact of gang-related violence on the lives of women.
To be a migrant woman includes different meanings: it means to be a breadwinner woman for personal or familiar decision; it means to be wife of an husband who will join her in the arrival country ...dealing with all the uncertainities of the labor market; it means to be a mother that drags her sons to an unknown new country or that fights daily to keep in touch with them when they leave overseas; but above all it means to be a woman that deals day by day with the cultural negotiation and with those stereotypes usually related with migration, doing it for herself and in order to create a better relationship with the arrival society. All these aspects are part of the interview done in february 2007 to a peruvian woman that lives in Naples since many years now and that is the main object of this article.
Through a close reading of Three Days to Walk, a memoir of disability by Chinese writer Zhang Yuncheng, this paper develops a new understanding of self-narrated life writing and its intersection with ...disability consciousness in the contemporary Chinese context. It examines the changing nature of disability life writing since the end of the early 1980s, a time when the images and voices of disabled began to emerge from effective cultural invisibility and silence. In a move away from state-sponsored 'triumph over tragedy' biographical narratives typical of the immediate post-Cultural Revolution period, Three Days to Walk is characteristic of a new popular trend to publish self-narrated life stories that reveal unique and intimate histories of disability experience both imbued with and propelled by a burgeoning sense of disability consciousness in the Chinese context.
In connection with a study relating to the diagnosing of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), youths and adults represent a particularly interesting group, partly because they have lived ...a relatively long time with the condition but without the diagnosis. In this article, I am focusing particularly on the life stories of youths and adults before they were referred for an ADHD assessment. A narrative analysis of a body of empirical data material shows that the subjects’ stories about the background for their referral are dominated by three themes: substantial health-related disorders and problems, diffuse sensations that “something” was wrong, and experiences relating to their identification with the diagnosis. The study shows that most of the respondents had been in contact with their regular general practitioner (GP)—and in many cases had tried out various diagnoses and treatments—long before the question of ADHD was raised.
