Between the 1960s and 1970s, art practices such as performance, conceptual, and land art challenged the very possibility of framing the artwork and clearly demarcating the boundaries that enclosed ...it. In this context, art and artists’ magazines assumed a pivotal role as they became the medium and site for the presentation and dissemination of these new art forms. This essay examines
Avalanche
, a magazine published between 1970 and 1976 in New York, and analyses how this periodical framed new art within its paper boundaries while at the same time expanding this art in time and space and showing the processual nature of the framing processes.

Are you ripped? Do you need to work on your abs? Do you know your ideal body weight? Your body fat index? Increasingly, Americans are being sold on a fitness ideal - not just thin but toned, not just ...muscular but cut - that is harder and harder to reach. In Body Panic, Shari L. Dworkin and Faye Linda Wachs ask why. How did these particular body types come to be "fit"? And how is it that having an unfit, or "bad," body gets conflated with being an unfit, or "bad," citizen?Dworkin and Wachs head to the newsstand for this study, examining ten years worth of men's and women's health and fitness magazines to determine the ways in which bodies are "made" in today's culture. They dissect the images, the workouts, and the ideology being sold, as well as the contemporary links among health, morality, citizenship, and identity that can be read on these pages. While women and body image are often studied together, Body Panic considers both women's and men's bodies side-by-side and over time in order to offer a more in-depth understanding of this pervasive cultural trend.
This paper aims to highlight a link between publishing business innovation and how editors manage creativity in the digital era. Examining the changing industrial and historical business context for ...the U.K. magazine publishing industry, two case studies are analyzed as representatives of different ends of the publishing company spectrum (one a newly launched magazine published by a major, the other an independent ‘magazine’ website start-up). Qualitative data analysis on publishing innovation and managing creativity is presented as a springboard for further research on magazine media management.
For consumers, among the most important sources of information related to nutrition are popular journals and magazines, including women’s and sports, but the diets presented there may lead to ...unhealthy weight-control behaviors. The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional value of regular and low-calorie diets presented in Polish women’s and sports magazines before and during COVID-19 pandemic. The study was based on two popular Polish magazines—one women’s magazine and one sports magazine, which regularly present various types of diets. The nutritional value of all the diets published from January 2014 to May 2022 was analyzed. The total number of included single-day menus was n = 119, while for analysis they were stratified based on: type of magazine (published in the women’s magazine n = 41 and in the sports magazine n = 78), year of publication (before the COVID-19 pandemic n = 78 and during n = 41), and type of diet (regular n = 61 and low-calorie n = 58). The analysis included the energy value and nutritional value. For the type of magazine, the diets published in the sports magazine were characterized by a higher intake of fat (p < 0.0001 for intake in grams and in % of energy) and calcium (p = 0.0330), whereas the diets published in the women’s magazine were characterized by a higher intake of carbohydrates (p = 0.0226 for intake in grams, and p = 0.0002 for intake in % of energy) and fiber (p = 0.0163). For the year of publication, the diets published during the COVID-19 pandemic were characterized by a higher intake of protein (p = 0.0166 for intake in grams), sodium (p = 0.0465), calcium (p < 0.0001), vitamin D (p = 0.0197), vitamin B6 (p = 0.0207), and vitamin B12 (p = 0.0277), whereas the diets published before the COVID-19 pandemic were characterized by a higher intake of carbohydrates (p = 0.0243 for intake in % of energy). For the type of diet, the regular diets were characterized by a higher energy value (p = 0.0020), as well as by a higher intake of fat (p = 0.0162 for intake in grams), carbohydrates (p = 0.0390 for intake in grams), mono- and oligosaccharides (p = 0.0084 for intake in % of energy), fiber (p < 0.0001), magnesium (p = 0.0323), iron (p = 0.0307), and vitamin B6 (p = 0.0204). The nutritional value of the diets presented in the Polish women’s and sports magazines was not justified by the type of magazine or type of diet, associated with the target group, which may cause the following of improperly balanced diets. However, the changes in the typical nutritional value of diets presented in the Polish women’s and sports magazines during the COVID-19 pandemic were justified by some specific needs for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.
This article examines 144 horoscope forecasts in the Turkish girls' magazine HeyGirl over the period 2019-20 using critical discourse analysis. It argues that although astrology is seemingly playful ...and harmless, it works as the "institutionalization of superstition" by encouraging girls to judge, evaluate and classify themselves through their experience by using the idea of a "perfect" future. This study therefore seeks to understand what kinds of tactics and strategies are used by horoscope forecasts in order to work like an ideologically disciplinary instrument. Analysis of the macrostructure of the horoscope forecasts identified four principal linguistic and textual tactics used by HeyGirl's horoscopes: detect (or invent) a situation; transform the situation into a problem; offer a solution for the invented problem; make a promise. Each horoscope forecast was examined by separating its content into these four tactics. These separations open up the envisaged inter-relations between situation, problem, solution and promise. These envisaged inter-relations are used to show how astrology transforms ideology and discourses into "knowledge," which comes from the future in order to produce, good, docile girls in the Turkish context.
This study aimed to describe the validity of the integration of religious values in BioPhy magazine and the religious character of pre-service science teachers when using the Floating Market-based ...BioPhy magazine. These religious values are related to the concept of fluidity, biodiversity, ecosystem, and the local character of South Kalimantan society, namely kayuh baimbai. This research was development research with Tessmer formative evaluation model. The test subjects to determine the religious character of students were 10 students from the Chemistry Education Department in the small group trial and 43 students from Biology Education Department in the field test. Both subjects were currently attending Fluid lectures in the 2021/2022 academic year in the Basic Physics course. Data were obtained through validation sheets, a self-evaluation inventory of religious characters, and observation sheets. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that integrating religious values in magazines was valid, with the Aiken validity coefficient ranging from 0.92 to 1.00. In addition, pre-service chemistry teachers have a religious character with an average score of 4.71, and pre-service biology teachers have a religious character with an average score of 4.77 in the affective domains A1 to A5 based on Bloom's taxonomy. The religious character of the two test subjects was categorized as very good. Thus, the Floating Market-based BioPhy magazine can be used to train the religious character of Pre-Service Science teachers. The developed magazine can be used in the Basic Physics course. Future research could be piloted for a larger sample as this research was limited to a not-so-large sample, and the magazine was developed only on fluid topics in the Basic Physics course.
