Reading recently that Edna O'Brien (age eighty-eight) and Margaret Atwood (age seventy-nine) each had a new novel out, I wondered if these books would differ from earlier work. Id been thinking about ...what critics have called "late style" or "lateness" In the fine arts, historian Kenneth Clark read in Michelangelo, Titian, and Rembrandt "a sense of isolation, a feeling of holy rage, developing into... transcendental pessimism" Rudolf Arnheim quotes octogenarian artist Hans Richter on qualities of the late paintings of Lyonel Feininger: "A ringing voice without sound, on the border between being and non-being, a man capable of giving utterance in this sphere of the almost divine." Having, Edward Said argued, "the power to render disenchantment and pleasure without resolving the contradiction between them," the artist's "mature subjectivity, stripped of hubris and pomposity, unashamed either of its fallibility or of the modest assurance it has gained as a result of age and exile" Or perhaps, as James Wood wrote, simply "the kind of cussed freedom that one associates with longevity, and with long confidence in artistic practice.
This paper focuses on explaining the concept of the Arabic word “almatsal” and it’s various derivatives in the Arabic lexicology and Qur’anic expressions. It equally explains different usage of the word (Almathal) as Almatha alkhurafi (legendary proverb) almathal alQur’ani (Quranic proverb) etc. The paper particularly concentrates on what is known as “almatsal as-sair” (Common Proverb) and other related literary and rhetoric terms such as idiomatic/wisdom expression, simile, figure of speech etc, in order to distinguish and make clarification of similarities and dissimilarities among them, characteristics of the said proverb were also discussed.
This paper considers the notion of "gambiarra", a feature of Brazilian and Latin American culture, as a literary element in two short stories of the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano. In this sense, some theoretical-critical approaches "will be proposed for possible meanings to "gambiarra," not only as a materially objectified element, but also as a process, an action and a production method. I present as hypotheses some of the socio-historical determinations that enable "gambiarra" as a social phenomenon as well as its categorization as a concrete expression of a certain ontological human tendency. The analysis of the short stories, after brief considerations about the author and his work, seeks to under-stand how the articulation of the "gambiarra" manifests itself in the narratives, allowing also dialectical glimpses about its social dynamics.
The exemplum 'Two Princes Born of a She-Bear' from the Gesta Romanorum is unique in its joining of two different folktale types. Billed by twentieth-century editors as 'Androcles and the Lion', which ...reflects the story's opening, the majority of the plot resembles the 'Strong John' narrative, also referred to as 'Juan Oso' or 'John the Bear', with its story of bestiality. Yet it differs from most of these tales of a bear-human child as well, first by changing a male bear abducting a human woman to a human father and bear mother, and then by having three children split along gendered lines into different species. Looking at this adaptation in light of the medieval encyclopedia tradition and ideas about human and non-human animals, this article argues that the text poses questions about the superiority of humans, the distinction of species, and the necessity of women. Although the story seems to make an effort to preserve 'natural' hierarchies, it also leaves open the possibility of dismantling them.
This article contributes to a growing debate over the sources for the account of the formation of the state found in Book 1 Chapter 2 of Machiavelli's Discorsi sopra la prima deca di Tito Livio. ...While recent scholarship has questioned the longstanding belief that Book 6 of Polybiuss Histories is the chapters principal source, I will argue here that Machiavelli is indeed indebted to Book 6, but in a different manner than previously observed. I will demonstrate this by reconstructing the interpretation of Book 6 that emerged in early sixteenth century Florence before situating the Discorsi within it.

Enticing food photography which stimulates its viewers’ cravings, often given a dismissive label “food porn,” is one of the most popular contents in contemporary digital media. In this paper, I argue ...that the label disguises different ways in which a viewer can engage with it. In particular, food porn enables us to engage in cross-modal gustatory imaginings of a specific kind and an image’s capacity to afford such imaginings can contribute to its artistic merit.
In addition to all the poems from The Big Gate, The Collected Poems also contains a second book-length manuscript entitled Ribbons and Lace. ...we will see the effortlessness with which Stuckey has ...reconstructed the antebellum era in many of her poems, creating captivating scenes both through the diction (writing in dialect) and the vivid imagery she uses. Towards the end of the interview, Stuckey has an interesting response to Roediger’s claim that she exerts a fair amount of control over her work, enabling the clear conveyance of emotional depth. Dundes also decries the ethnocentrism of white scholars in the treatment of folklore from nonwhite groups, such as the Vietnamese or African Americans.
