As a “plug-and-play” nuclear system, the technology of fission battery enables nuclear reactor systems to function as batteries. Undoubtedly, advanced intelligent technologies have to be adopted to ...realize the excellent attributes of fission batteries, i.e., economic, standardized, installed, unattended, and reliable, and its commercial applications. This article proposed the edge-cloud collaboration technology for fission batteries to satisfy its intelligent requirements. A detailed framework for a fission battery management system has been developed. To develop such a management system, four types of concrete transmission information for the edge-cloud collaboration (i.e. resource and data, AI technologies, application and services, safety and strategies) are identified. The edge and cloud designs are also discussed in detail, including their hardware and software. A functional framework of edge-cloud collaboration network platform for fission battery management system is developed preliminarily. The framework is based on a three-layer structure, i.e., perception layer, technical layer and application layer. Although no detailed algorithm or verification is introduced (since the edge-cloud collaboration framework has been widely used in some industry fields but not in nuclear engineering), as primarily work for the future detailed study of fission battery, it is necessary and extremely important.
Genetic breeding of plants has the goal of obtaining the genotypes that produce the characteristics with better adaptation for human needs in certain circumstances. Plant Genetics offered the breeder ...the knowledge to make his work more efficient. Almost all modern varieties come from traditional breeding. Other methods such as the induction of mutations, the use of somaclonal variation alone or in combination with the above, and the transfer of foreign genes by genetic engineering have been used with point results. In 2010, the use of nuclear technology as a tool in the genetic crops breeding, supported by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), was incorporated in Paraguay. Faced with a society that consumes products generated by the induction of mutations and irradiated food for its conservation, we pose the challenge of probing how the population perceives the use of nuclear technology; to achieve this goal, we applied a survey at the entrance of supermarkets in Asunción. We are faced with a scenario with an population with practically complete level of schooling, able to understand, to reason and to express an opinion on a specific topic. It is reported mostly on the internet, social networks and television. In terms of nuclear technology, while 91% believe that it is risky, more than half of those who have ever heard of it think it can be beneficial.
This editorial provides an overview of ten scientific articles published as
the Special paper selection in Thermal Science. The papers were selected
from almost six hundred contributions, presented ...at the 16th Conference on
Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES
2021), held on October 10-15, 2021 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The topics covered
in the Special paper selection include economics of electricity markets,
nuclear technology, repowering of the coal-based power plant, hybrid
renewable energy system, sustainable biomass handling and conversion,
post-combustion emissions control, and efficient cooling technology. The
editorial also emphasised the papers recently published in the Special
Issues of leading scientific journals dedicated to the series of SDEWES
Conferences.
Ethiopia is implementing a ten-year perspective plan (TYPP 2021-2030) with multi-layered activities that would enhance the capacity of the nation in science, technology, and innovation and effective ...application to economic transformation. While the country is endowed with many untapped natural resources and opportunities in using different areas of science and technology for development, its socio-economic development is not satisfactory. The current Ethiopian government as a part of its multi-layered activities in the TYPP has recently decided and launched a nuclear power program (NPP) to use nuclear science and technology applications in its energy mix and sustainable development strategies and is preparing infrastructures for its effective implementation. This paper provides a review of the role of nuclear science and technology in energy production and sustainable development; and analyses the status, challenges, and issues in the Ethiopian national nuclear program. The review sets out to discuss the main issues in a national nuclear program, nuclear energy management, and nuclear knowledge management demands and strategies for its effective application. Knowledgeable commitment to the nuclear science and technology program in developing countries like Ethiopia can boost economic growth.
The Institute for Hot Chemistry in Karlsruhe was founded 1959, to support the development of a reprocessing process for spent nuclear fuel. Based on the PUREX process, variants and improvements for the combination of extraction and redox steps were investigated from laboratory to near‐commercial pilot scale. By the end of nuclear reactor research, the re‐named institute for technical chemistry turned to new topics in environmental and energy related research. During the transition period, the institute participated in the GALLEX collaboration, an international basic physics experiment with the construction and operation of a radiochemical solar neutrino detector.
Studies of risk perception and risk communication concerning the nuclear area are quite common in scientific literature. However, though numerous studies on this topic point to the importance of ...scientific and technological knowledge in facilitating the reduction of perceived risks, there are few papers that effectively discuss the role of education in risk communication on the subject, particularly in Brazil. The objective of the present work was to reflect on this problem by analyzing the results obtained from two case studies on the implementation of the Brazilian Multipurpose Reactor, in the city of Iperó, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. As was verified in the investigation, most participants of the study had high perception of risk with respect to the implementation of the reactor. Nevertheless, although important in the project of the reactor implementation, it was verified that the state, municipal and community schools of the city of Iperó had not participated, in the public hearings nor had they discussed the issue inside the school community, until the moment of the research.
Diego Rivera's mural El hombre controlador del universo (1934) can be read as foreshadowing the anxieties and optimisms about atomic power that shaped popular culture in Mexico during the nuclear ...age. In epic fashion, Rivera's vision affirms the agency of ordinary people in the face of a technological epoch while eerily anticipating the bipolarity of the Cold War, themes that would be revisited by Julián Soler in his film Santo contra Blue Demon en la Atlantida (1969), which bears out the prophecy of Rivera's mural.
