Eminent historian David Labaree describes a gradual shift, over the last two centuries, in Americans’ beliefs and attitudes about the goals of public education. At its founding, our school system was ...designed mainly to serve the public good, conceived at the time as an effort to create a unified citizenry. By the early 20th century, the schools were understood to serve the public good by developing human capital. More recently, though, the public aims of schooling have faded from view, as Americans have come to see education mostly as a private resource.
Integrating science concepts with real contexts, including the COVID-19 context, is essential in the learning process to become meaningful. As one of the public education, schools are expected to ...provide students with generic skills on dealing with a pandemic using the concepts learned at school. Training on integrating science concepts with real contexts in learning was carried out to teachers and students at Junior High School 08 Rejang Lebong, Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. Training was conducted through ICARE (Introduction, Connection, Application, Reflection, and Extend). The results show that teachers can integrate science concepts with the COVID-19 context. These concepts are respiratory organs, blood cells, antibodies, vaccines, and healthy life. After the activity, the teacher designed science lessons plan to integrate concepts with the previously discussed context. It is hoped that the science learning carried out will be meaningful so that students no longer feel bored participating in learning, especially online learning.
Students who are eligible for special education and related services are entitled to a free appropriate public education (FAPE), which is delineated by the Individualized Education Program (IEP). The ...purpose of this descriptive study was to examine 133 IEPs from seven rural districts that were interested in evaluating their compliance with state and federal special education regulations. The researchers evaluated (a) the present level of academic and functional performance (PLAAFP), (b) IEP goals, (c) PLAAFP and goal alignment, and (d) progress monitoring. Fewer than 7% of the IEPs examined included PLAAFP statements, goals, and contingencies for progress monitoring that met regulatory standards. The majority of IEPs (74%) evaluated did not provide complete statements of how a student’s disability affected school performance. Methods for quantitative progress monitoring were also frequently absent from the documents (23%). Furthermore, the PLAAFP, goals, and progress monitoring were often unaligned. Implications for school practice and areas for future research are reported.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, school board members played a prominent role in deciding reopening plans. Using an original large-scale survey of board members, our goal is to understand how the ...polarized, political context of pandemic responses shaped the decision-making processes of members as they experienced dramatic increases in workload. We find school board members are much more likely to identify at the extremes of partisan identity, as strong Democrats or strong Republicans. How they identified mattered in who they trusted to tell them information, how much control they felt the board should have in the process of reopening plans, and who should interpret data about COVID. If the other party was in power at the state level, members from opposing parties had less trust in state sources. Most school board elections are nonpartisan, but that does not mean that the members themselves do not strongly identify with a party.
