During World War II some 120,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly removed from their homes and detained in concentration camps in several states. These Japanese Americans lost millions of dollars in ...property and were forced to live in so-called "assembly centers" surrounded by barbed wire fences and armed sentries.
In this insightful and groundbreaking work, Brian Hayashi reevaluates the three-year ordeal of interred Japanese Americans. Using previously undiscovered documents, he examines the forces behind the U.S. government's decision to establish internment camps. His conclusion: the motives of government officials and top military brass likely transcended the standard explanations of racism, wartime hysteria, and leadership failure. Among the other surprising factors that played into the decision, Hayashi writes, were land development in the American West and plans for the American occupation of Japan.
What was the long-term impact of America's actions? While many historians have explored that question, Hayashi takes a fresh look at how U.S. concentration camps affected not only their victims and American civil liberties, but also people living in locations as diverse as American Indian reservations and northeast Thailand.
Relocations within and between nursing homes often induce stress, anxiety, and depression in residents and cause additional workload for and burnout in staff. To prevent this, many nursing homes ...deploy pre-transition initiatives, bridging initiatives, and post-transition initiatives to support residents and staff during the relocation process. As little is known about these initiatives, this study aims to explore the pre-relocation, bridging and post-relocation initiatives used for relocations within and between nursing homes.
In seven Dutch nursing homes, eight focus groups were conducted with two to six participants (N = 37) who were actively involved in relocation processes in different roles (i.e., managers, healthcare professionals, support staff, client council members, residents and family). The focus groups were conducted based on a predefined topic list and lasted approximately 60 min. The transcripts were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic coding.
Nursing homes had to be inventive in developing relocation initiatives as neither shared guidelines nor knowledge exchange on this topic were available. A total of thirty-seven relocation initiatives were identified in these seven nursing homes. Nineteen pre-relocation initiatives were identified, of which eight emphasized information and engagement, three highlighted training and practice and eight stressed orientation and visualization. Seven bridging initiatives were identified, of which four emphasized coordination and continuity and three highlighted entertainment and celebration. Eleven post-relocation initiatives were identified, of which seven emphasized evaluation and troubleshooting and four highlighted change and adjustment.
The identified relocation initiatives were developed unassisted by nursing homes, due to a lack of shared guidelines, knowledge exchange and mutual learning on this topic. Therefore, it may be expedient and more effective to develop general guidelines for relocations within and between nursing homes in collaboration with nursing homes.
Pertinent to contemporary demands for reparations from Turkey is the relationship between law and property in connection with the Armenian Genocide. This book examines the confiscation of Armenian ...properties during the genocide and subsequent attempts to retain seized Armenian wealth. Through the close analysis of laws and treaties, it reveals that decrees issued during the genocide constitute central pillars of the Turkish system of property rights, retaining their legal validity, and although Turkey has acceded through international agreements to return Armenian properties, it continues to refuse to do so. The book demonstrates that genocides do not depend on the abolition of the legal system and elimination of rights, but that, on the contrary, the perpetrators of genocide manipulate the legal system to facilitate their plans.
Previous research from our lab has shown that short distance trailering of insulin dysregulated horses has an impact on insulin responses. It is of interest to understand if other stressful events ...could also impact these insulin responses. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine if paddock relocation by hand walking of ID horses had similar effect on insulin responses in comparison to the insulin response after trailering. Twenty-three mixed-breed, mixed-sex, adult horses were relocated to different paddocks in the same groups of horses, on the same farm and day in September 2022. Horses were classified by endocrine status and considered severe ID if initial insulin concentrations (d0) were ≥ 100 uIU/mL (18 ± 2 yr; BCS 7.2 ± 1.0; CNS 2.5 ± 0.5; n = 5), ID if insulin concentrations were > 45 but < 100 uIU/mL (20 ± 4.3 yr; BCS 7.2 ± 0.7; CNS 2.1 ± 0.4; n = 9), and non-ID if insulin concentrations were ≤ 45 uIU/mL (21 ± 3.9 yr; BCS 6.0 ± 0.5; CNS 1.8 ± 0.3; n = 9). Horses were group housed with ad libitum access to forage, and water for study duration. Peripheral blood samples were collected from all horses during the same morning hours (0800 hto 0900 h) on d0 (pre-relocation), d1, and d5 and were analyzed for resting serum insulin concentrations using a radioimmunoassay. Two-way RM ANOVA was used to analyze the data in SimgaPlot version 1515. Insulin concentrations were log-transformed to achieve normality. Significance was considered at P < 0.05. Results indicated an overall significant effect for endocrine status (P < 0.0001) but no significant difference for study day (P = 0.14) or interactions of endocrine status by study day (P = 0.71). However, some individual horses classified as severe ID or ID had as much as a 3-fold increase in insulin response post relocation. Based on evaluation of individual ID horses, stressful events aside from trailering could have an impact on insulin responsesTherefore, insulin responses are impacted by stressful events aside from trailering. Similar to when trailering, it is important to be cautious and consider monitoring ID horses after housing relocation.
•New lower bound for the Block Relocation Problem.•New beam search heuristic algorithm for the Block Relocation Problem.•Extended computational experiments.
In this paper we deal with the restricted ...Block Relocation Problem. We present a new lower bound and a heuristic approach for the problem. The proposed lower bound can be computed in polynomial time and it is provably better than some previously known lower bounds. We use it within a bounded beam search algorithm to solve the Block Relocation Problem and show that the considered heuristic approach outperforms the other existing algorithms on most of the instances in the literature. In order to test the approaches on real-size dimensions, new large instances of the Block Relocation Problem are also introduced.
The stories outlined in this article attest to the ways in which forced displacement is not a one-time event but rather an iterated and indefinite process of moving, settling, adapting, and planning ...for the future under conditions of radical uncertainty, material deprivation, and precarious legal status. Ethnographic methods are uniquely positioned to follow how these displacements structure the experience of sustaining a life in exile.
