This monograph introduces novel methods for the control and navigation of mobile robots using multiple-1-D-view models obtained from omni-directional cameras. This approach overcomes field-of-view ...and robustness limitations, simultaneously enhancing accuracy and simplifying application on real platforms.
In this book, we present medical robotics, its evolution over the last 30 years in terms of architecture, design and control, and the main scientific and clinical contributions to the field. For more ...than two decades, robots have been part of hospitals and have progressively become a common tool for the clinician. Because this domain has now reached a certain level of maturity it seems important and useful to provide a state of the scientific, technological and clinical achievements and still open issues. This book describes the short history of the domain, its specificity and constraints, and mature clinical application areas. It also presents the major approaches in terms of design and control including man-machine interaction modes. A large state of the art is presented and many examples from the literature are included and thoroughly discussed. It aims to provide both a broad and summary view of this very active domain as well as keys to understanding the evolutions of the domain and to prepare for the future. An insight to clinical evaluation is also proposed, and the book is finished with a chapter on future developments for intra-body robots.
This Brief introduces engineers to the main principles in ethics, research design, statistics, and publishing of human subject research. In recent years, engineering has become strongly connected to ...disciplines such as biology, medicine, and psychology. Often, engineers (and engineering students) are expected to perform human subject research. Typical human subject research topics conducted by engineers include human-computer interaction (e.g., evaluating the usability of software), exoskeletons, virtual reality, teleoperation, modelling of human behaviour and decision making (often within the framework of 'big data' research), product evaluation, biometrics, behavioural tracking (e.g., of work and travel patterns, or mobile phone use), transport and planning (e.g., an analysis of flows or safety issues), etc. Thus, it can be said that knowledge on how to do human subject research is indispensable for a substantial portion of engineers. Engineers are generally well trained in calculus and mechanics, but may lack the appropriate knowledge on how to do research with human participants. In order to do high-quality human subject research in an ethical manner, several guidelines have to be followed and pitfalls have to be avoided. This book discusses these guidelines and pitfalls. The aim is to prepare engineers and engineering students to carry out independent research in a responsible manner.
Bring life to your robot using ROS robotic applications About This Book • This book will help you boost your knowledge of ROS and give you advanced practical experience you can apply to your ROS ...robot platforms • This is the only book that offers you step-by-step instructions to solidify your ROS understanding and gain experience using ROS tools • From eminent authors, this book offers you a plethora of fun-filled examples to make your own quadcopter, turtlebot, and two-armed robots Who This Book Is For If you are a robotics developer, whether a hobbyist, researchers or professional, and are interested in learning about ROS through a hands-on approach, then this book is for you. You are encouraged to have a working knowledge of GNU/Linux systems and Python. What You Will Learn • Get to know the fundamentals of ROS and apply its concepts to real robot examples • Control a mobile robot to navigate autonomously in an environment • Model your robot designs using URDF and Xacro, and operate them in a ROS Gazebo simulation • Control a 7 degree-of-freedom robot arm for visual servoing • Fly a quadcopter to autonomous waypoints • Gain working knowledge of ROS tools such as Gazebo, rviz, rqt, and Move-It • Control robots with mobile devices and controller boards In Detail The visionaries who created ROS developed a framework for robotics centered on the commonality of robotic systems and exploited this commonality in ROS to expedite the development of future robotic systems. From the fundamental concepts to advanced practical experience, this book will provide you with an incremental knowledge of the ROS framework, the backbone of the robotics evolution. ROS standardizes many layers of robotics functionality from low-level device drivers to process control to message passing to software package management. This book provides step-by-step examples of mobile, armed, and flying robots, describing the ROS implementation as the basic model for other robots of these types. By controlling these robots, whether in simulation or in reality, you will use ROS to drive, move, and fly robots using ROS control. Style and approach This is an easy-to-follow guide with hands-on examples of ROS robots, both real and in simulation.

Ubiquitous Robotics is a novel paradigm aimed at addressing the coordinated behaviour of robots in environments that are intelligent per se. To this aim, suitable methods to enforce cooperative ...activities must be assessed. In this article, a formalism to encode spatio-temporal situations whose occurrences must be detected by a context-aware system is introduced. The Situation Definition Language is a tool used to specify relationships among classes of sensory data in distributed systems (such as those adhering to the Ubiquitous Robotics paradigm), without posing any assumption on how data themselves are acquired. The capabilities offered by the language are discussed with respect to a real-world scenario, where a team of mobile robots cooperates with an intelligent environment to perform service tasks. Specifically, the article focuses on the system ability to combine in a centralized representation information originating from distributed sources, either mobile (i.e., the robots) or fixed (i.e., the intelligent devices in the network).
