This study aims to assess the temporal trends in the prevalence of spectacle use and spectacle coverage for refractive errors in population-based studies conducted during 2011-2012 and 2017 among ...those aged ≥ 40-years in the state of Telangana, India. An intervention in the form of 10 vision centres and a secondary centre was established in one district (Khammam) after the 2011-2012 study and another district (Warangal) was left to secular trends.
In both the studies, multi-stage cluster random sampling methodology was used to select the participants. In addition to a clinical examination, a questionnaire was used for collecting information on current and previous use of spectacles, type of spectacles and details of the spectacle providers. The same questionnaire was used in both the studies.
In total, 2,485 participants were examined in the 2011-2012 study and 2,711 participants were examined in the 2017 study in Khammam. Similarly, 2,438 and 2,646 participants were examined in Warangal in the two studies, respectively. In Khammam, the age and gender-adjusted prevalence of current spectacle use increased from 30.0 per cent (95% CI 28.2-31.9) to 34.8 per cent (95% CI 33.0-36.6) in the 2011-2012 and 2017 studies, respectively (p < 0.01). However, in the Warangal district, the age and gender-adjusted prevalence of current spectacle use declined from 32.8 per cent (95% CI 31.0-34.7) to 27.6 per cent (95% CI 25.9-29.3) during the 2011-2012 and 2017 studies, respectively (p < 0.01). In Khammam, the spectacle coverage increased from 26.9 per cent to 35.6 per cent, but it declined from 43.8 per cent to 35.7 per cent in Warangal between the studies in 2011-2012 and 2017.
An increase in spectacle use and coverage was observed in Khammam where the secondary centre and vision centres were established, compared to Warangal where there was no such intervention. The results suggest a positive impact of the intervention in the Khammam district and suggest replication of the model to address the burden of uncorrected refractive errors.
Background and Objectives: Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory asymmetric corneal degenerative disease characterized by the steepening and distortion of the cornea. In this disease, irregular ...astigmatism makes the subjective refraction difficult. Using the Pentacam, we aimed to determine the corrective astigmatism of the spectacle. Methods: The subjective refraction and Pentacam imaging were performed for 317 keratoconic patients who referred to the Salouti Eye Clinic, Shiraz, Iran. Then, the astigmatism values obtained with subjective refraction were compared with the values of anterior and posterior corneal surface astigmatism obtained with the Pentacam imaging. Results: The mean age of 317 keratoconic patients was 29.81 years (range: 15 to 45 years). The minimum, maximum, and average astigmatism of the corneal front surface were 0.3, 16.8, and 3.21 diopters, respectively. Also, the minimum, maximum, and average astigmatism of the corneal back surface were 0, 2.8, and 0.67 diopters, respectively. Moreover, the P value was lower than 0.001 in the regression analysis of the subjective refraction for both the power and axis of the cylinder. Conclusion: The regression formulas obtained in this study can accurately (with a probability of 99%) predict refractive astigmatism, using corneal astigmatism.

In so doing, the authors conclude, ISIS introduces into global spaces of publicity a "spectacular thanatopolitics"-a novel form of thanatopolitics that brings the spectacle of the savaged body, banished from display since the 19th century, back to the public stage, thereby turning the pursuit of death into the new norm of heroic subjectivity.
To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a trifocal intraocular lens (IOL), the TFNT00 (Alcon, Fort Worth, TX), versus a monofocal IOL, the SN60AT (Alcon).
Food and Drug Administration–approved, ...prospective, multicenter, nonrandomized, parallel-group, assessor-masked, confirmatory trial.
Patients enrolled were 22 years of age or older with a diagnosis of bilateral cataract with planned removal by phacoemulsification with a clear corneal incision.
Consented participants selected their preferred IOL, which was implanted sequentially into each eye of patients meeting eligibility criteria.
The coprimary effectiveness outcomes were mean photopic monocular best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA; 4 m) and distance-corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA; 40 cm) at 6 months after surgery. Secondary effectiveness outcomes included mean monocular distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA; 66 cm) and proportion of participants responding “never” to question 1 of the Intraocular Lens Satisfaction questionnaire (regarding frequency of spectacle use in the past 7 days). Safety outcomes included frequency of “severe” and “most bothersome” visual disturbances.
Two hundred forty-three patients underwent cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of the TFNT00 (n = 129) or SN60AT (n = 114) and were followed up for 6 months. Noninferiority of TFNT00 to SN60AT in mean photopic monocular BCDVA (95% upper confidence limit of the difference was <0.1 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution logMAR margin), and superiority in mean photopic monocular DCNVA (difference of 0.42 logMAR; P < 0.001) and DCIVA (difference of 0.26 logMAR; P < 0.001) were demonstrated. The proportion of patients never requiring glasses overall was superior for TFNT00 versus SN60AT (80.5% and 8.2%, respectively). Starbursts, halos, and glare were the most frequently rated severe symptoms with TFNT00; however, less than 5% of patients were very bothered at month 6.
The TFNT00 exhibited superior monocular DCNVA and DCIVA to a spherical monofocal IOL, with comparable monocular BCDVA. Binocular visual acuity was 20/25 or better for distance to near (+0.5 D to –2.5 D), resulting in high levels of spectacle independence. Less than 5% of patients were very bothered by the photic visual disturbances associated with the TFNT00 at 6 months after surgery.
Myopia is an increasingly serious health issue among children and adolescents worldwide. This study investigated the situation related to myopia among students in Chengdu, a city in western China, ...and analyzed the prevalence of myopia spectacle wear and myopia full-correction and their influencing factors to understand the current status of myopia prevention. This school-based cross-sectional study investigated 1582 schools in seven districts of Chengdu City, China, enrolling a total of 417,337 students aged 6–18 years (elementary, middle, and high school) from 2020 to 2022. Examination items included uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), slit lamp examination and non-cycloplegic autorefraction. Myopia was defined as non-cycloplegic SE ≤ −0.50 D + UCVA> 0 log MAR (age ≥6). The prevalence of myopia spectacle wear is defined as the number of people wearing glasses for myopia/the number of people with myopia (%) within the study population, and myopia full-correction is defined as normal vision after wearing glasses for myopia (≤0 log MAR for 6 years and above). With the support of the government, this programme is conducted 1–2 times a year. Statistical analyses are conducted to determine the association between myopia and various parameters.
The average age of the entire survey population was 10.96 ± 3.5 years, and the overall prevalence of myopia was 48.7%, myopia spectacle wear was 65.7%, and myopia full-correction was 50.5%. With increasing age and educational levels, the prevalence of moderate to high myopia, the prevalence of myopia spectacle wear, and the prevalence of myopia full-correction all rise. The prevalence of mild myopia full-correction (46.5%) was higher than that for moderate myopia (47.1%) and even higher than that for high myopia (39.6%). The correct utilization rate of myopic spectacles was 33.17%, increasing with age and education levels, with the highest correct utilization rate of 40.7% among those with moderate myopia. The prevalence of myopia among children and adolescents in Chengdu is relatively low, and the prevalence of myopia spectacle wear and myopia full-correction need to be improved, and it was found that with the increase of myopia, the prevalence of myopia full-correction among adolescents decreased instead.

Purpose
It is well known that some patients experience difficulties adapting to new glasses. However, little is known about what patients themselves understand of the adaptation process, and how this ...influences their attitudes and the decisions they make when adapting to a new pair of glasses. Nor is it understood whether these factors affect their wearing habits.
Methods
We conducted four focus groups. Participants were 22 glasses wearers (mean ± SD age 43 ± 14 years, range 21–71 years) who reported they: (1) wore spectacle correction for distance vision (single vision, bifocal or progressive lenses); (2) had struggled to get used to a new pair of glasses and (3) sometimes chose not to wear their distance correction. Focus groups were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically.
Results
We identified three themes. Trust is about how participants' trust in their optometrist and themselves influences the likelihood of them adapting successfully to new glasses. Conflict describes how the advice patients have received about adapting to glasses can conflict with what they have experienced and how this conflict influences their expectations. Part of Me explores how participants' experiences and feelings about their glasses are important to adaptation and this includes physical, visual, emotional and behavioural aspects.
Conclusions
The traditional optometric perspective of adaptation to glasses is much narrower than that held by patients, and significantly underestimates the physical, behavioural and emotional adaptation that patients must go through in order to feel fully comfortable wearing their glasses. Patients should receive significantly more information about adaptation, including symptoms that may be experienced and why these happen, practical tips to aid adaptation, and when and how to raise concerns. Patients should also receive information about the day‐to‐day effects of blur adaptation to avoid them not wearing their glasses, including for vision‐critical tasks such as driving.
On 17 June 2017, Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, called on pro-regime vigilantes to ‘fire at will’ or to act on their own discretion in putting the state’s Islamic ...teaching into practice without the need to consult either their superiors or the relevant authorities. Our article argues that, since 1979, the policy of ‘firing at will’ has been the defining feature of the Islamic Republic’s model of governance and corresponds to the spirit of its constitution. Inspired by the scholarship on disciplinary policies, this article seeks to contextualize the ‘firing at will’ policy within the ethno-religious and racial discourse embodied in and warranted by the Islamic Republic’s constitution. Finally, by discussing the state’s violent treatment of Kurdish kolbers (cross-border laborers), we will show how the Iranian state’s internal colonial policies have engendered a state of exception and normalized the daily spectacle of violence in Eastern Kurdistan.
Self-defined as ‘an online social network of people sharing biodiversity information to help each other learn about nature’, iNaturalist is a mobile application whose primary goal is ‘to connect ...people to nature’, closely followed by the secondary goal of ‘generating scientifically valuable biodiversity data from these personal encounters’, which the founders believe can be achieved simultaneously with the primary goal in a self-reinforcing logic. Following an approach informed by media studies on wildlife photography and film, and science and technology studies as well as insights from interviews with users and participant observation in the Los Angeles area, this article makes the case that mobile applications such as iNaturalist sit at a tension because while they can ignite interest in the natural environment, they also prescriptively describe and normalize a ‘nature’ and an epistemology that are particular to the natural sciences.
