The settlement of the oil storage tank during liquefaction, is the most serious problem for the engineers and company owners. In this paper, one of liquefaction-resistant methods which constrain the ...soil under the oil tank by a sheet pile wall is used. Some series of model tests using centrifuge are carried out to evaluate the liquefaction-resistant method from a settlement point of view. The effects of the sheet pile wall and mass of an oil tank are tested, respectively. The results show that the settlements of the oil tank depend on the mass of the oil tank, and on the type of sheet pile wall, and also show that the closed type wall is more useful against liquefaction than the open type wall.
The influence of driving imperfections on the water pressure resistance of HZ/AZ walls
The HZ/AZ wall system is widely used around the world as an efficient and robust retaining wall solution, mainly used in port structures and deep excavations. The system consists of alternating HZ‐M king piles with or without intermediary double AZ sheet pile sections as infill sheets. If a combined wall is subjected to high water pressure, its load‐bearing behavior and resistance is influenced. The final position of the piles leads to an actual wall geometry, which influences the state of stress and thus may also affect the load‐bearing behavior of the wall elements subjected to water pressure. Permissible driving imperfections of a combined sheet pile wall are agreed between the contracting parties. This article presents studies on the effects of pile driving imperfections on the load‐bearing behavior as well as a model for estimating the allowable water pressure of the intermediate piles of HZ/AZ combined walls, taking these pile‐driving imperfections into account.
