"Grand challenges" are formulations of global problems that can be plausibly addressed through coordinated and collaborative effort. In this Special Research Forum, we showcase management research ...that examines societal problems that individuals, organizations, communities, and nations face around the world. We develop a framework to guide future research to provide systematic empirical evidence on the formulation, articulation, and implementation of grand challenges. We highlight several factors that likely enhance or suppress the attainment of collective goals, and identify representative research questions for future empirical work. In so doing, we aspire to encourage management scholars to engage in tackling broader societal challenges through their collaborative research and collective insight.
The article is based on the research materials of the network interaction of universities in the context of physical culture and sports activity. The research is based on the methodology of network ...theory and the resource approach in the strategic management of organizations. The results of the study show that the formation of a network model can significantly increase the coverage of the population with projects of physical culture and sports activity using already existing resources. The results obtained indicate the effectiveness of strategies for networking organizations.

No entanto são escassos os estudos que ...relacionam o modelo das alavancas de controle estratégico (MAC) proposto por Simons (1995) ao alinhamento estratégico. O presente estudo objetiva avaliar os relacionamentos entre as alavancas de controle estratégico de Simons (1994) com o alinhamento estratégico vertical na Itaipu Binacional. Dados coletados por meio de um survey junto a 341 respondentes e analisados por meio da modelagem de equações estruturais pelo método PLS (Partial Least Squares) revelaram que as alavancas (MAC) se associam, exercendo influência positiva, com o alinhamento estratégico vertical, com destaque para os sistemas diagnóstico, de crenças e interativo, que produziram associações estatísticas significativas.

For a half century the editorial mission has been to provide articles that insightfully define a strategic management or leadership problem, dilemma or opportunity from the perspective of senior ...management; propose a creative solution to the problem or a way to take advantage of the opportunity; describe the model, tool, technique, new research finding or concept that enables the solution and show evidence or examples that the proposed solution has worked or could work. In this tradition, the articles in this issue examine how today’s leaders are succeeding by employing potent strategic management concepts – Agile management, corporate multi-business strategy, advanced technologies matched with open innovation, digital network business models, experience offering innovation and leveraging risk. For decades leaders have struggled to “manage their corporate family of businesses in a way that will create value over and above what the businesses could create if they were independent entities with their own direct access to capital markets,” notes Professor Brian Leavy, emeritus professor of strategy at Dublin City University Business School.
Purpose: This study aims to examine the integration of sustainability into the strategic management practices of banks in Jordan, identifying both challenges and opportunities.
Theoretical ...framework: The study's conceptual framework outlines the independent variable as strategic management, including formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluating, and leadership, while the dependent variable is sustainability, focusing on both social and environmental goals. Existing models and frameworks for sustainability-oriented strategic management are reviewed and a customized model for Jordanian banks is developed.
Design/methodology/approach: The research employs a qualitative research design, using semi-structured interviews with senior managers from ten Jordanian banks. Data is analyzed using content analysis and thematic analysis.
Findings: The study finds that implementing strategic management processes can have a positive impact on sustainability, particularly with regards to environmental sustainability goals. The study recommends that Jordanian banks prioritize sustainability in their strategic management practices, establish sustainability targets, evaluate risks and opportunities, and adopt sustainable practices.
Research, Practical & Social implications: The study has implications for both research and practice. It highlights the importance of incorporating sustainability into strategic management practices for banks in Jordan and identifies the challenges and opportunities for doing so. The study also has social implications, as incorporating sustainability into strategic management practices can enhance the reputation of banks, decrease costs, and generate positive societal and environmental outcomes.
Originality/value: This study contributes to the literature on sustainability-oriented strategic management by developing a customized model for Jordanian banks. The study also provides insights into the challenges and opportunities for banks in Jordan in integrating sustainability into their strategic management practices.
Research summary: A substantial and burgeoning body of research has described the influence of platform-mediated networks in a wide variety of settings, whereby users and complementors desire ...compatibility on a common platform. In this review, we outline extant views of these dynamics from the industrial organization (IO) economics, technology management, and strategic management perspectives. Using this review as a foundation, we propose a future research agenda in this domain that focuses the on the relative influence of network effects and platform quality in competitive outcomes, drivers of indirect network effects, the nature and attributes of complementors, and leveraging complementor dynamics for competitive advantage. Managerial summary: In many industries, such as social networks and video games, consumers place greater value on products with a large network of other users and a large variety of complementary products. Such "network effects" offer lucrative opportunities for firms that can leverage these dynamics to create dominant technology platforms. This article reviews current perspectives on network effects and the emergence of platforms, and offers several areas of future consideration for optimal strategies in these settings.
Microfoundations have received increased attention in strategy and organization theory over the past decade. In this paper, we take stock of the microfoundations movement, its origins and history, ...and disparate forms. We briefly touch on similar micro movements in disciplines such as economics and sociology. However, our particular focus is on the unique features of the microfoundations movement in macro management. While the microfoundations movement in macro management does seek to link with more micro disciplines such as psychology and organizational behavior, it also features a unique set of questions, assumptions, theoretical mechanisms, and independent/dependent variables that complement the focus in the micro disciplines. We also discuss the disparate criticisms of the microfoundations literature and the challenges the movement faces, such as defining distinct theoretical and empirical programs for microfoundational research. The overall purpose of this manuscript is to clearly delineate the promise and uniqueness of microfoundations research in macro management, to discuss how the movement originated and where it is going, and to offer rich opportunities for future work.
