Théodore Jouffroy’s editorial work was exclusively devoted to the introduction and translation of Scottish philosophers: Dugald Stewart’s Outlines of Moral Philosophy, and Thomas Reid’s Complete ...Works. Our study attempts to determine the meaning of these editions, which Jouffroy did not conceive as a contribution to the history of philosophy, but rather as a reflection on the nature and organisation of philosophical sciences. In the first section of this paper I describe the complex editorial context in which these editions were developed. In the second part, I show, mainly on the basis of the preface to Thomas Reid’s Complete Works, how the relationship between Jouffroy and Victor Cousin evolved.
French philosophers from the 19th century did not consider editorial tasks to be unedifying, nor indifferent to philosophical work itself. But political criteria are not sufficient to analyse them as ...actions. Editors did not only aim at distinguishing fiends and friends in an actualized history of philosophy, they also assumed their work was philosophical in itself. The six papers of this dossier underline the singularity of philosophical edition as a philosophical practice in 19th century France.
By studying the school editions of Leibniz’s Monadology published on the occasion of this work’s introduction to school programmes in 1880, we will demonstrate two points. First, how the intellectual ...and political context shapes the interpretations of Leibniz. Then, how these editions can be considered as philosophical positions. We will show how the figure of Leibniz is used to defend secularism, to fight against the eviction of metaphysics by the positive sciences and to found the autonomy of morality. We will also consider how publishers use it as a resource to fuel their own philosophical thought. Editing and commenting the classics contributes to a political and intellectual debate whose actors and issues will be retraced. Thus, the objective of this study is to consider these school editions from a philosophical point of view, and to show the importance of the context of the period for the practice of the history of philosophy.

The nineteenth century has been called an age of monuments. In some places even one piece made a difference. This book is a study of the intellectual background and physical making of Finland’s first ...public sculpture, the statue of Professor Henrik Gabriel Porthan by Carl Eneas Sjöstrand. The idealised but sombre Porthan was born under the influence of German neoclassicism. Development on the project was slow but sure. The Swedish artist had to be supported over three years while he was putting together his first monumental piece in Munich and Rome, after which came another three years wait before the cast arrived to Finland. The bronze sculpture, commissioned by the Finnish Literary Society and raised by public subscriptions from people of all classes, was unveiled in the city of Turku in September 1864. Finns took some pride in the fact that, unlike other nations that had raised monuments to kings and generals, here the first place was given to a scholar. In this study Sjöstrand’s pioneering bronze is placed in a wider context and compared with works by his precursors and contemporaries in the international sculptor colony of Rome.
The article for the first time publishes in full four letters of the Ukrainian philologist, folklorist, writer Opanas Vasyliovych Markovych (1822–1867) to Hryhoriy Pavlovych Galagan (1819–1888), one ...of the most influential landowners of the Left-bank Ukraine and a prominent public figure. Opanas Markovych is one of those representatives of the Ukrainian intellectual community of the middle of the 19th century, whose contribution to the development of National culture has not been yet appreciated. Ethnographic search, the recording and publication of Ukrainian song folklore, the appearance of the works of Marko Vovchok, and the discussion of Panteleimon Kulish’s novel “The Black Rada” are the leading themes of the epistolary. References to the family life of the correspondence participants create a domestic-historical context of their communication attention should be paid to the fact that the letters are written in Ukrainian, so in this regard, their publication is important for a wide range of scholars of humanities. Therefore, their publication is important for a wide range of scholars of humanities – not only historians, but also philologists, specialists in sociolinguistics and others. The language of the letters, with a large number of folk idioms, using archaic grammatical forms, represents the way of the Ukrainian literary language in the 19th century.
A researcher dealing with the topic of the presence of Aristotle’s philosophy in the modern Russian space of the humanities is faced with the task of comprehending the origins of the attitude towards ...Aristotle in the history of Russian science. Aristotle in Russia, unlike Europe, is represented in a rather limited way, and even where he is present, modern Russian philosophy uses a rather narrow layer of thought from his heritage. The article is devoted to the theme of a special attitude to the figure of Aristotle in the field of domestic social and humanitarian thought of the XIX century. During the formation of Russian philosophy as an independent phenomenon of global culture, Aristotle also falls into the field of view of its founders. The interest in Aristotle was not originally of a scientific (historical-philosophical or philological) nature, but stemmed from current socio-political disputes, which would later become known as the disputes between Slavophiles and Westernizers. Aristotle in this case acts as a part of world culture, in which domestic intellectuals of the 19th century claim to a special place. This era is considered as a period that laid the basic principles of attitude towards Aristotle in Russia in the 20th century. Such principles are the attitude towards Aristotle as a historian of science and as a part of world culture.
