Abstract
Throughout the last two decades the timber building sector has experienced a steady growth in multi-storey construction. Although there has been a growing number of research focused on trends, ...benefits, and disadvantages in timber construction from various technical perspectives, so far there is no extensive literature on the trajectory of emerging architectural typologies. This paper presents an examination of architectural variety and spatial possibilities in current serial and modular multi-storey timber construction. It aims to draw a parallel between architectural characteristics and their relation to structural systems in timber. The research draws from a collection of 350 contemporary multi-storey timber building projects between 2000 and 2021. It consists of 300 built projects, 12 projects currently in construction, and 38 design proposals. The survey consists of quantitative and qualitative project data, as well as classification of the structural system, material, program, massing, and spatial organization of the projects. It then compares the different structural and design aspects to achieve a comprehensive overview of possibilities in timber construction. The outcome is an identification of the range of morphologies and a better understanding of the design space in current serial and modular multi-storey mass timber construction.
This paper presents a new approach to robotic fabrication in the building industry through the conceptualization, development and evaluation of a largescale, transportable and flexible robotic timber ...construction platform – named TIM. Novel solutions are necessary to make robotic fabrication technologies more accessible for timber construction companies. The developed robotic system is location independent and reconfigurable. It can be rapidly integrated into existing fabrication environments of typical carpentries on a per-project basis. This allows the exploitation of emerging synergies between conventional craft and specialized automation technologies and benefits both quality and productivity of the trade. We portrait how the platform enabled the effective robotic prefabrication of a complex segmented wood shell structure and discuss the fabrication system based on critical performance parameters. Further research is needed to disentangle the mutual dependencies of building-systems and respective automation technologies.

The field of architecture is more and more referring to wood as a sustainable solution for satisfying the need of new buildings while offsetting carbon emissions. In parallel, the research in Robotic ...Timber Construction (RTC) has evolved rapidly, focusing both on fabrication and assembly processes in order to improve the productivity of the construction industry and extend the production digital chain. This paper presents an original workflow for the automation from design to layered robotic assembly of reversible timber structures, aided by human-robot collaboration. An advanced digital design workflow for non-standard timber structures is established, shifting the focus towards the assembly of a kit of discrete wood elements into larger configurations that can be reconfigured in time. Linked to this, collaborative robots are employed for grasping, positioning and fixing of discrete timber elements, with the introduction of a multi-phase end effector that connects wood elements through reversible joinery. As such, the work introduces fundamental design and manufacturing concepts for an automated construction process that extends the material life cycle of wood, and consequently, its carbon store. The enhancement of robotic assembly is here achieved with the (1) integration of a feedback system based on location and force signals, and (2) human collaboration to provide immediate assistance to the robot in the case the signals do not match the defined assembly conditions. The various developments are applied to a research demonstrator which crystallizes the various design, constructional, and manufacturing inputs into a physical output, which is discussed from multiple viewpoints, in order to delineate relevant areas for future studies.

Abstract
The future of future generations of humanity is conditioned by the decisions, actions and behavior of contemporary society towards the surrounding nature. The current critical state of the ...environment caused by the human factor forces one to think about a change in thinking in relation to ecology. Progress in this direction and the pursuit of a sustainable way of life is also felt in the construction sector. Modern wooden buildings are an environmental alternative to buildings made of energy-intensive materials. This type of construction is currently experiencing great success worldwide and is already part of the standard of living in many countries. Progress in this ecological way of construction has been recorded in recent years by the construction industry in Slovakia, but in its development it is progressing much more slowly than other countries of the European Union. The potential behind the development of wood-based structures is currently not fully exploited and it is therefore necessary to pay increased attention to research and innovation in the timber construction sector. The work deals with a survey of consumer preferences in the field of wooden buildings.
Abstract
Abstract
Monument‐compliant repair of the Sun Sail in Dortmund's Westfalenpark
The Sun Sail in Dortmund's Westfalenpark was designed in 1969 as a demonstration object for advanced timber construction by the architects Behnisch und Partner and an engineering team from Julius Natterer (concept) and Scholz from Munich (planning). After more than four decades of standing, the damage to the listed building, originally designed as a temporary pavilion, impaired the stability, so that it could only be used through additional reinforcements, until it was finally classified as in danger of collapsing and closed. The refurbishment of the sun sail in accordance with the requirements of a monument is based on the use of system reserves of the supporting structure and was thus able to largely preserve the substance and upgrade it for the permanent use.
