Polyamory and consensual non‐monogamy (CNM) refer to partnerships in which individuals have romantic, emotional, and/or sexual relationships with multiple people, with the knowledge and consent of ...everyone involved. Recent decades have seen a surge in research interest in polyamory and CNM, warranting efforts to pause and take stock of empirical findings. In this scoping review, we evaluate and synthesize 209 research studies about polyamory and CNM, paying particular attention to trends in research design, theoretical application, and substantive findings. Researchers have focused broadly on (a) outcomes of CNM relationships, (b) attitudes and perceptions of CNM, (c) antecedents of CNM, (d) CNM relational processes, (e) CNM identity development, (f) polyamorous family and parenting, and (g) CNM politics and discourse. We synthesize research findings within each domain, identify gaps in the literature, and discuss the challenges and opportunities we see in advancing research on polyamory and CNM.
In this article, we examine a decade of parliamentary debates related to the topic of family to understand the reasons and the rhetorical strategies that drive the support of the Romanian MPs for the ...traditional family. Starting from four themes identified in the literature as relevant for the topic of family—national identity, religion, heteronormativity, and children—we identify the dominant definition of the “traditional family” as that of the Christian Romanian family founded and defended by ancestors, that is, the union between a man and a woman, for the purpose of reproduction, as the only place that can guarantee that children will grow up in a healthy and moral environment. This hegemonic narrative is enhanced by the anti-gender campaign repertoire and strengthened by populist logic, aiming to restore the true Romanians values—Christian, ancestral, and national—in opposition to contemporary Western relativism and the alleged colonial cultural project of gender equality+ politics. The decadent present, threatening national identity, the continuity of the people, Christian values, the natural gender order, or the safety of children, can only be saved by returning to the traditional family, which functions as a hegemonic signifier re-imposing, in the logic of the narrative of return, a nationalist, conservative, and religious definition of the family, based on biological and natural foundations and necessarily heteronormative and chauvinist.
This article focuses on the cases of Croatia and Serbia to demonstrate how the heteronormative model of family and the constructs of “protection of family and children”—which are central to ...anti-gender mobilizations—can be traced to the 1990s heteronationalist discourses of family in both countries. The authors argue that the crucial link between these two discourses is that they both increasingly problematize diverse family forms and imbue “traditional family” with special value as the structure that is “best for children” and therefore merits special legal and policy protection with a view to its restoration as society’s unquestionable cornerstone. The analysis of narrative content in parliamentary and public debates about family-related laws and policies in Serbia and Croatia between the 1990s and the 2020s is guided by the following questions: What are the continuities in the legal framework and narratives on the family in post-socialist Croatia and Serbia compared with the period of socialist Yugoslavia? Who are the actors who create narratives of return to a traditional family in post-socialist Croatia and Serbia, and how do these actors define family and care for the family? The article calls attention to how what is “old”—narratives of return to the traditional family—forms the backbone of religious-conservative oppositions to gender and sexuality rights, including the most recent wave of anti-gender mobilizations.
Since the mid-2010s, the Far Right in Europe has seen growing support in parliamentary elections and political movements. This article explores the convergence among right-wing actors in Europe, ...focusing on their use of familial narratives as a mobilization tool. This study theorizes the entanglement of far-right parties and movements through the concept of frame-bridging. The central theme in these narratives is the image of the traditional family, now increasingly defined by patriarchy, Christianity, and European identity. This reimagined concept of the traditional family intensifies ethnic and racial discrimination in Europe, further narrowing European identity and posing challenges for immigrants and those who fail to conform to this narrow definition of belonging. This article specifically examines the role of the traditional family concept in uniting right-wing actors across regions, using examples from Generation Identity (GI), the European Center for Law and Justice (ECLJ), and the European Christian Political Movement (ECPM).
Society?s demographic development holds great importance for all social
processes: economy, education, science, culture, and others. Therefore, it
is important to evaluate the various factors ...influencing the formation of
demographic trends and understand their significance. This paper considers a
range of sources influencing the formation of young people's attitudes
toward family values, namely: the immediate environment, mass media, media
content, literature, social surveys, social advertising, and propaganda, as
well as bloggers as a modern element of media communications that has a
fairly large influence on the young audience. The paper analyzes Russia?s
policy of the demographic problem, which is associated with the currently
being implemented Concept of the State Family policy in the Russian
Federation until 2025 (The Concept) aimed at strengthening and protecting
the family as the fundamental basis of the Russian society. The paper
presents the results of mass surveys among the Rostov region youth: (1) on
the key points of the Concept the sample included 450 young people aged
20-29 and (2) on the youth?s preferences for various types of mass media
with a sample of 634 respondents aged 16-25. It was revealed that the core
foundations of the family culture are sufficiently established in the
Russian Federation with the dominance of the marriage relations as free,
voluntary, and equal association of men and women, which is consistent with
the state policy of support and development of family values.
As there are differences between male and female understandings and perceptions of the world, their experiences are not identical either. The authority of the father / husband or pater familias (as ...existed in ancient Rome) is the ultimate given in patriarchy, and as such - is inviolable. The primary goal of this paper is to show how the traditional family treats a woman, and how learned patterns of behavior determine a woman’s destiny. In the light of this, the traditionally and socially given practices by which,in the “ sacred “ institution of marriage, a woman is treated, and by which, as a total opposite, a man is percieved, have led to unequal power relations, which we tried to prove in this paper.
Introduction. Since 2007, the legislation of the Russian Federation has been witnessing active development of the regulatory framework for regulation in the sphere of demographic and family policy, ...mainly by acts of a conceptual and strategic nature. The adoption of amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation in 2020 significantly increased the growth of regulatory documents in this area in order to prevent the risk of loss and destruction of traditional family values. Theoretical analysis. The author highlights that active work in all areas in the development of the institution of traditional family values should be carried out, including information and propaganda measures. At the same time, propaganda and its types are widely reflected in regulations, which indicates the initial stage of institutionalization. Result. The division of the propaganda of traditional values according to the priorities of their impact made it possible to single out such functions as stimulating, preventive, modeling ones. The author emphasizes the importance of the transition of such propaganda to the legal field, predetermination of the rule of law, dependence of its effectiveness in the fight against anti-family ideology, change in socio-cultural stereotypes of behavior, and decline of family values on this process. The analysis of models for fixing the propaganda of traditional family values in Russian legislation was carried out. The researcher concluded that in the normative acts of various levels, the legislator more often builds the propaganda of family values alongside other positive propaganda of socially useful behavior, spiritual, moral and patriotic education, promotion of a healthy lifestyle, as the basic elements of life.
Intimate partner homicide (IPH) is a global public health issue that has serious consequences for an individual’s health. Whereas prior research has made some progress analyzing the ...perpetrator-victim relationship in understanding the dynamics of IPH, research set in the context of China in this field using the perpetrator-victim relationship as a focal variable in analyzing IPH is still lacking. The current study addresses this gap and builds on existing research by exploring the significance of the perpetrator-victim relationship in order to facilitate a deeper understanding of IPH in China. After examining 979 IPH criminal judgments, the findings revealed that the perpetrator-victim relationship is an important clue in understanding IPH in China today. By analyzing the correlation between intimate relationships as a focal variable and other variables such as IPH characteristics and risk factors, it is possible to understand the prevalence of IPH in China in greater detail. Irrespective of the kind of relationship between the perpetrator and victim, the findings revealed that most of them come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, have no previous history of intimate partner violence, and are not satisfied with their marriages. Although research has provided detailed explanations, the perpetrator-victim relationship remains neglected, especially in the context of research on contemporary China. The findings showed that over half of the perpetrators and victims had intimate relationships with people outside their marriages. This may be the main reason for the rapid increase in the number of instances of IPH, which seems to be in tandem with China’s rapid modernization and urbanization.
The article examines the theory and methodology behind social loneliness in the family context, as well as empirically assessing the socio-demographic manifestation of this phenomenon in modern ...Russia. Several factors exacerbating and minimizing social loneliness are presented. A strong emphasis is placed on the importance of families in alleviating social loneliness and on family construct preservation. Using the cluster method, the authors analyze criteria-defined groups from the general sample of an empirical study that was held by the Family and Demography Center of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences (TAS) in 2022. As a result, a conclusion is drawn about factors that the respondents consider to be the most significant in minimizing social loneliness. In this connection, the authors find it important to define the family as a synergistic mechanism for reducing such social risks and assess the risks of transforming the traditional family construct. In addition, the study uses the female subsample to examine the role of gender in the severity of social loneliness. Determining the role of women in the creation of family relations and the transfer of social value-based attitudes, the authors assess the family construct stability and the likely features of its transformation to develop a preventive socio-demographic policy for reducing social deviation and maintaining stable social value-based relationships.
