The present BA dissertation examines the occurrence of backward interference % specifically, the negative influence of English as an L2 on Slovene as the L1 - in the English-to-Slovene translations ...of Slovenian senior university students of English Language and Literature. By pinpointing backward-interference errors in decoding, i.e. instances of deviation from the norms of Standard Slovene that can be traced to English, attributing them to structural differences between the two languages and a high level of English proficiency on the part of the participants, the study provides a much-needed insight into what can go wrong at the level of orthography, grammar and lexis when intrusive backward interference is at work in students who "have put their mother tongue aside" for the sake of second language proficiency.
