65 patients (of 87 invited) who underwent ankle-to-groin stripping surgery between January 1994 and December 1995 responded to our invitation to answer aquestionnaire and attend a medical visit in ... January 2000. 66.2% of them were women and 33.8% men. Among the risk factors for CVI, the occupational (83%) and familial (79%) were the most common. The most frequent complaint before surgery was tiredness of the leg (66%) and calf muscle cramps (62%). 94% of the patients were satisfied with the outcome of surgery, although about 14% had significant hematoma or wound infection. Chronic crural edema on the operated leg, diagnosed on the basis of calf circumference measurement, was found in more than half (52%) of the patients. The cosmetic result was assessed as good or very good in 95% of cases. Significant varicose vein reappearance requiring surgical correction was found in 9.2% of patients and saphenous nerve lesion in 33.8% of patients who had undergone surgery.
