Modern medical implants have to satisfy strict standards concerning materials, machining processes and tolerances. Typical medical implants are endoprothesis of hip joint, knee joint and shoulder ...joint. The term medical implant also includes bone nails, bone screws, bone plates and other forms. The most widely used bio-compatible metal based material is titanium alloy grade 5, Ti6Al4V. Recently, research and development has been focused on medical implants made of bioabsorbable and shape memory materials which represent a challenge in machining techniques. In this contribution an overview of some examples of medical implants, manufacture and their application in surgical practice is presented.
