  • The implementation of the Local Agenda 21 for Maribor, Slovenia
    Blažeka, Vesna
In Slovenia, the harmonization of the environmental legislation with EU guidelines began in 1991 with its independence. The major problems in Maribor were air pollution, groundwater pollution and ... illegal dumps of municipial and industrial waste. Environmental parameters have been thoroughly monitored for the last five years (in earlier years they were not carried out systematically). The results show that some values exceed the state-defined parameters. A continuos upgrading of monitoring databases is used for the assessment of the state of the environment, analyses of trends and as the basis of sanitation programs in individual fields containing the schedules for their implementation. They are also used for the preparation of the long-term local environmental protection strategy - Local Agenda 21. Within the framework of its memebership in the European Sustainable Cities & Towns Campaign and the framework of EU pre-accession activities, the municipality is in the process of renewing the local legislation and local strategies in the field of environmental protection and harmonizing them with EU guidelines.
