  • Die deutsche Sprache und Fremdwörter im 3. Reich
    Szalatnay, Thomas
The paper offers an overview of the treatment of German words of foreign origin during the period of National Socialism, while also tackling the questions whether the leading National Socialists held ... a hostile attitude towards foreign words and what attitude towards foreign words the 'Deutscher Sprachverrein' (German Language Society) assumed in teh years 1933-1945. Seeing that there is a quite widely held opinion that the National Socilaist anti-Semitic ideology of those years was also manifest in a puristic attitude towards words of foreign origin, the paper also proposes to investigate to what degree a reciprocal effect between anti-Semitism and this attitude towards foreign words can be ascertained. All this is presented based on the examples of Hitler's and Goebbels' use of foreign words, of the official steering of the language by the National Socialists and of the language policyof 'Deutscher Sprachverein'.
