Diversity of figs (Ficus carica L.) from the east Adriatic coast

In western Balkan countries, the common fig is an underutilized fruit species which thrives along the eastern Adriatic coast and islands. Its cultivation occupies special niches at local levels and ...is mainained by cultural preference and traditional practices. In order to engance fig investigation as an important constituent of a sustainable agricultural system, a filed survey of fig genetic resources in Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro was performed. In the diversity study, 35 cultuivars and 59 wild, spontaneous fig trees were included and collected plant material was evaluated using 7 microsatellite loci. We used two clustering methods to determine the genetic relationships between sampled fig trees: a bayesian (STRUCTURE) and multivariate method (DAPC). Diversity study showed the clear separation between the north and south Adriatic fig germplasms and confirmed the complexity of fig cultivar denominations.
