  • Upgrading of structures on seismically active areas [Elektronski vir]
    Jančar, Jurij ...
With the recent development of light construction systems and high land prices or lack of space in densely populated urban areas, upgrading of existing structures is increasing. The topic of ... upgrading becomes more problematic on seismically active areas where older buildings were designed according to older codes with little or no seismic design guidance. In addition various upgrade systems can have a different influence on the existing structure. However, the influence of the existing structure on the upgrade must not be overlooked. Light construction systems present a favourable choice, mostly due to their low mass that does not contribute much to the increase in seismic forces on the existing structure. With the aim of investigating various upgrade system types a series of experiments was conducted on the shaking table of the IZIIS institute in Skopje, Macedonia. Three different constructions (two types of a reinforced concrete frame and a RC frame with masonry infill) were upgraded with 4 different construction systems (with sub-variations); with cross laminated timber, a light timber frame, a steel frame and a glass-timber construction. All the tests were performed in elastic state in order to keep the concrete/masonry structure undamaged. Accelerations and displacements were monitored in all stories. Vibration periods were analysed to assess the influence of the stiffness variations of the upgrades.
