  • Experiential learning from the perspective of classroom teachers
    Cotič, Nastja ...
For students to acquire quality knowledge in science and technology, it is crucial that lessons are experientially oriented. The extent to which lessons are experiential also depends on the teacher’s ... attitudes toward this type of teaching. In this study, classroom teachers’ attitudes toward experiential learning were discussed. The survey was performed among 166 classroom teachers teaching in Slovenian primary schools. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire, focusing on whether teachers with different attitudes toward experiential learning also differed in their assessment of their own competency to teach and in their attitudes toward teaching science and technology. In addition, we wanted to uncover whether teachers with different attitudes toward experiential learning differed in their evaluation of the teaching profession and the staff room atmosphere. The results showed that teachers who value experiential learning more highly have statistically significantly higher evaluations of their own competency, more positive attitudes toward teaching and the profession, more positive evaluations of the atmosphere of the staff room at the institution where they are employed and more frequent use of problem-based learning and techniques to stimulate creative thinking. The findings provide a basis for designing an environment which encourages teachers to implement more experiential teaching.
