Bats in the diet of owls in NW Istra

The diet of three owl species in Istra was analyzed in order to examine the role of bats in their diets. More then 13,000 vertebrate prey remains in the diet of owls were isolated and 164 bats were ...found. The proportions of bats in the diet of Tyto alba did not exceed 1%, with the exception of one locality in Mirna Valley. We suppose that the higher ratio in this locality is due to the increased probability of meeting between the owl and bats rather than to slective predation. Our data on the proportions of bats in the diet of T. alba resulted higher in comparison with other studies in Europe. However, bats are only occasionally preyed upon by owls, since their proportions in the diet didn't exceed 3%.
