  • Monitoring physical activity patterns in local community as a part of inhabitants' active lifestyle promotion [Elektronski vir] : a pilot study
    Plevnik, Matej, 1981-
Background: The link between physical activity patterns and the environment presents an important part of a healthy and active lifestyle promotion. It has been suggested that the characteristics of ... the natural and the built environment are associated with the level of physical activity and health characteristics of the population in a community. The purpose of this paper is to present a possible approach for monitoring patterns of inhabitants% physical activity in correlation to the natural and the built environment in a local community. Methods: The monitoring was performed by using the cross-sectional approach and the observational method. In selected days from March to July 2018, the monitoring of inhabitants% physical activity patterns was performed in the Municipality of Brezovica, a municipality in Central Slovenia statistical region. Results: The most frequent physical activity patterns were walking and cycling, however, there were many individual characteristics at selected locations. In a week-to-weekend comparison, a noticeable pattern could be seen; inhabitants were namely more active in the suburban than in the urban settlements in the municipality. Natural environments near the two lakes in the municipality were visited more than other natural and urban sports infrastructure and playgrounds. Conclusions: The proximity and quality of natural and built environments are associated with recreational and transportation activities. Ensuring an appropriate environment, which stimulates and promotes an active lifestyle, is of great importance for the health of the community. Insights into the state of physical activity patterns can contribute to the process of planning and designing the environment, which will support the programmes of promoting physical activity in a local community.
