  • Determination of trace iodine in various edible oils by neutron activation analysis

    From many food composition and nutrition tables it is evident that data for essential iodine in various food articles and especially in edible oils are very scare. Accordingly, the purpose of the ... present contribution was to investigate the concentration levels of total iodine in different edible oil samples by the use of fast, sensitive, highly selective, precise and reliable radiochemical separation following neutron activation to induce the radioisotope 128I (T1/2=25 min; Egama=44keV). The results obtained show that iodine contents in all analysed vegetable oil samples lie in the analytically difficult to establish nanogram concentartion range. Such concentration levels are more or less also characteristic of many other food articles and products, which from the analytical standpoint, is the principal reason for the scarcity or insufficiency of reliable data for iodine in different food composition and nutrition tables.
