SGC – General List of Subject Headings COBISS.SI

SGC (COBISS.SI General List of Subject Headings) is an authority database for subject headings.

Contents

SGC contains authority records for subject headings in Slovenian and in English. Records for topical and geographic names prevail, some records are for personal names, family names, corporate names and uniform titles.

SGC is based on the Sears authority database by H. W. Wilson from 2001, which includes records for subject headings from the 17th edition of Sears List of Subject Headings from 2000. The following sources are used to supplement SGC with new terms: Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH, http://authorities.loc.gov/), list of subject headings of the National Library of France (RAMEAU; Repertoire d'autorite-matiere encyclopedique et alphabetique unifie http://rameau.bnf.fr/), terms from fields for defining subject headings in the COBIB.SI database, etc.

Headings in the SGC database are brought in line with headings from LCSH or RAMEAU to a great extent, which refers also to various relations between terms. When editing, links to relevant LCSH, RAMEAU or MeSH headings are added to SGC records. The language for SGC subject headings – under construction – is based on post-coordination, which means that subject headings are formed without the use of subdivisions. Component parts of the SGC language are as follows: controlled vocabulary, relations between terms, instructions for forming subject headings and rules for defining subject headings.

SGC covers all subject fields; the level of specificity is not limited. Headings for topical, family and geographic names are formed in accordance with the SGC rules. Headings for personal and corporate names and uniform titles are formed in compliance with relevant cataloguing rules.
