  • Optimization of intake and exhaust systems of a gasoline engine
Pehan, Stanislav ; Kegl, Breda ; Kegl, Marko
This paper presents an approach to optimal design of the intake and exhaust systems of a gasoline racing car engine with real-world requirements. The proposed approach assumes the employment of a ... gradient-based optimization procedure and a commercial black-box program to perform the numerical analysis of the mechanical system under consideration. This is achieved by using two stand-alone programs - the optimizer and the simulator. The optimizer is a general-purpose driver program that contains a suitable optimization algorithm while the simulator is a problem dependent program based on some commercial analysis software. The data exchange between these programs is established by suitable XML data files being self-descriptive and platform-independent. The expected behavior of the simulator is achieved by problem-dependent input/output wrapper programs. The proposed procedure is employed to raise the power of a Honda 600 CBR engine while keeping some combustion and geometry-related quantitics within the specified limits. Numerical results confirm the usefulness of the presented approach.
