    The Ljubljana classification recognizes four grades of epithelial hyperplasticlaryngeal lesions: simple and abnormal hyperplasia are benign categories; atypical hyperplasia (risky epithelium) is ... potentially, and carcinoma in situ actually malignant. Risky epithelium, the most important category of epithelial hyperplastic laryngeal lesions, should be considered asone intermediate between a benign state on the one hand and carcinoma in situ, on the other. The results of treatment and follow up of patients with epithelial hyperplastic laryngeal lesions justify our proposal for separating these aberrations according to the proposcd histological criteria and confirm the most important role of atypical hyperplasia during the process of laryngeal carcinogenesis. Methods of molecular pathology may be of value in the prediction of distinguishing between low and high risk groups of atypical hyperplasia.
