  • The bias in acceleration perception for simulated motion in depth

    The study examined how acceleration of motion in depth is perceived. Change in target relative size was used to simulate four types of 3-D motion: continuous, interruoted continuous, stroboscopic, ... and staircase motion. SImulated travelled distance varied as a power function of time. Using the staircase method we manipulated the exponent of motion function and measured thresholds for deceleration and acceleration. It was found that deceleratde approach and accelerated recede were perceived as constant-velocity motions. The results contradict Runeson's (1974) perceptual concept of velocity and are better explained with estimation of 2-D changes in target relative size and with the space contradiction effect.
