    Photolytic/photocatalytic oxidation and catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) areadvanced oxidation processes (AOPs) used for degradation of different organic compounds with high removal efficiencies. ... In this study, both processes were used for degradation of bisphenol A (BPA), an organic compound,which is widely used in the production of plastics and is mainly present in industrial wastewaters and landfill leachates. For experiments, theinitial concentration of 20 mg/l of BPA was prepared in ultra pure water. Toxicity of the initial solution and treated samples was determined by standard procedures using bacteria (Vibrio fischeri), crustacean (Daphnia magna) and fish embryos (Danio rerio). Estrogenicity of initial solution and treated aqueous samples was evaluated by ĆYeast Estrogen ScreenĆ assay and expressed as relative estrogenic activity (REA, %). BPA removal was followed by HPLC analyses and conversion ratios were calculated. The results showed that the initial BPA sample was toxic to V. fischeri (72 % luminiscence inhibition), D. magna (100 % immobility) and D. rerio embryos (80 % lethal effects), and high estrogenic activity was determined (REA 100 %). Conversionsof treated samples regarding BPA reached up to 100 %, but due to formation of by-products (e.g. phenol, 4- isopropylphenol, semi-quinone derivate of BPA) toxicity and estrogenicity still remained.
