    The article argues that the popularity and status of (the genre of) science fiction in Slovene culture was heavily influenced by the unsympathetic publishing industry, editorial policies and choice ... of translators. A method proposed by Kitty van Leuwen-Zwart is implemented in the discussion of three seminal works of American science fiction, translated into Slovene; it is based on the premise that both micro- and macro-structural shifts in translation can furnish indications of the translational norms adopted by the translator, their interpretation of the original text and the strategies applied during the process of translation. Through this approach the article illustrates how modifications, mutations and modulations on a micro-structural level in Slovene translations of science fiction had a significant effect on macro-structural dimensions of this genre in Slovenia, which resulted in an inadequate (delaying or even preventing proper) recognition and reception of this particular genre.
