The Effect of temperature on wear behaviour of polymer (POM) gears [Elektronski vir]Kupec, Alja ; Kalin, MitjanThe use of plastic gears dates back to 1950s, but they are nowadays gaining ever increased attention due to their promising potential to substitute metal gears in various applications, i.e. ... automotive, medicine, food, to note only some. Beside poorer mechanical properties, the main disadvantages that limit the use of plastic gears are lower thermal conductivity and stability, i.e. lower operating temperatures, as compared to metal. Consequently, temperature has a critical influence on all polymers, much more so than on metals or other materials. The temperatures - even for the same load and velocity - vary greatly with testing devices, gear sizes and shapes, surrounding environment, as do the cooling and heating rates. Moreover, the temperature, either root, flank or bulk, also varies with the operating conditions, meaning that even in the same S-N curve data at different stresses are actually obtained at different temperatures. In our previous work, we reported the essential effect of the temperature on the fatigue life of POM gears, revealing a greatly improved fatigue life of POM gears when kept at low temperature (30 °C) [1]. In this study, we focused on the influence of temperature on wear rate and wear mechanism of POM gears tested against steel gears. The gear root temperatures were kept constant at 30 °C, 50°C and 70 °C in the range from 1.0 Nm to1.4 Nm torque and the tests were stopped after the intermediate number of cycles. The results show that, as compared to high temperatures, the greatly improved fatigue life of POM gears at low temperatures (30°C) are connected to changes in contribution of prevailing wear meachnisms. Namely, at low temperatures gears fail due to wear, whereas at higher temperatures, due to wear and thermal overload (tooth tilting).Vir: ECOTRIB 2017 [Elektronski vir] (PDF datoteka (1 f.))Vrsta gradiva - prispevek na konferenciLeto - 2017Jezik - angleškiCOBISS.SI-ID - 15589147
